2010 Camaro

I know there are very few people in this community that would consider this car...but I was curious what kinda of hypermiling potential it would have. The 6 speed manual transmission gets 17 city 29 freeway and 23 combined. In my Mazda3 I can beat EPA freeway with relative easy with my combined driving. So, I wonder if this camero could be driven at 30+mpg regularly. I have a hard time imagining being able to have 300+HP and still have 30+mpg, I am guessing its geared so that the 29mpg is about as good as its going to get, so your not going to see the huge MPG gains by slowing down to 55 on the freeways.

Re: 2010 Camero

Others will know better than me, but I'd say sorta steady state (DWL) highway mileage should regularly be mid 30s with max sidewall. City mileage will stink unless you FAS it fairly agressively, in which case it should do fine in the city, too.

It is a classic car, though not one of interest to me, given there are cars with way more mpg potential without all the work to get it (Prius & Fusion hybrids, for example). But for anyone buying the M6 Camaro, I fail to see why it will not exceed EPA by percentages similar to other cars.

Re: 2010 Camaro

In general driving on a level highway with the CC on you get about 1.15% of EPA hy. You should be able to get 33 mpg at 60 mph in steady highway driving. If when you change your tires, you go a bit narrower, you can add another .3 mpg or so to the highway mpg. I'm guessing that a 10 mm narrower tire will drop your frontal area by 1/8 sq ft. Your effective frontal area is maybe 7-8 sq ft-so 25 less drag= maybe 1% better FE.

If you like it, but it. You can get maybe 22-25 mpg city with just a little effort and 33 mpg hy with no effort.

Re: 2010 Camaro

I would agree with the 33 will little to no effort.

Totally guessing.... but... with all that torque and a MT you should be able to do wonders with Pulsing in that car.
then a 6 speed! depending how tall they went with 6, there could be a LOT of potential.

if you pick up a scangauge you will get great info on what is going and picking up the mileage will be a lot quicker.

Re: 2010 Camaro

Most drivers here could get mid 30's out of the 400+ hp SS with a few fast on ramps.

I looked close and hard at a G8 just before Pontiac got the AXE.

Re: 2010 Camaro

All city driving and short trips I don't see why you couldn't get around 25mpg out of it. Mostly freeway driving, probably 30 to 35mpg.

Re: 2010 Camaro

@ 55, I'd venture to say you can easily average 40mpg. my car rated for 25 hwy, cruises at 35mpg easily @ 50mph and btw 55-58mph.

City driving, with a 6 spd manual, you can easily get 25 + by shifting early. The V6 comes with a lot of torque, so this shouldn't be an issue with your car.

I'd say you can average over 30mpg if you have a mix of city/hwy driving and paying attention...even if you do get a little pedal happy sometimes.

edit: Make use of your tall gears and torque to improve your city mileage. 6th gear @ 35mph should be a shocker.

Re: 2010 Camaro

My car's rated at 29 mpg highway. I can easily get 40-45mpg on the highway with P&G. I would think that it would possible to get somewhere around that too. Supposedly there are people who have gotten 40+mpg on a Corvette. I can't imagine that feat would be any harder on a Camaro.

I'll venture to call BS on that. On varied level highway i can get 40mpg in my versa at 55. In the city I can hit 35-40 on good days. What makes you believe that a car with an engine twice as big can pull off the same?

The larger engine can run at a much lower rpm to maintain that same speed. The smaller engine has to run at a much higher rpm so the gearing needed ends up giving it a buzz-bomb sound with the accompanying low mpg. One of my son's friends has an '04 GTO 5.7L with the 6-MT. He is by no means whatsoever a hypermiler but, I've learned a few things from my son's observations while he was riding with him. Such as: In 6th gear, the engine is turning at 2500 (or less) rpm's and the onboard mpg readout was indicating in the neighborhood of 25-30 mpg. At a more sane 55 mph, the engine was turning right around 1600 rpm's and indicating 40+ mpg on level ground. I believe that in the hands of a good hypermiler, 40 mpg is very possible with a good P & G routine. I would careful to reserve BS status until actual testing is involved. By the way, here's something to run by the ole BS detector: My son (CobraPond) has hit nearly 93 mpg (92.8 mpg) in his '99 Saturn SL2 5-MT with my wife and daughter in the car over a 6+ mile distance.
