Insight Marathon Attempt: Live - Sept. 25 - Oct. 4, 2006
Hi All:
___We are in the hunt ... Randall took his out and I took Louis' out. Both pegged at 150.0 but the winds are rising and that is a killer as both Insight's were holding onto 1.4L/100 KM until the final 10 mile segment into a head wind. Both finished up at 150.0 mpg or 1.5L/100KM. Louis is on the course right now in Randall's. We still should finish up on Sunday but the winds sure do knock the Insight for a loop in terms of FE. We will be battling those all afternoon
___A ton more to add about Randall's pack, 12V at night, distance delta with the live FCD based FAS vs. the Key based one (2.8 miles worth) and how far we are behind already. 53 degree F launch but it is now touching 70 +. Winds out of the west-south-west at ~ 10 mph.

Arrg. I think eveyrone on the team needs to go on a diet to try to gain back some of that mpg the wind is taking away.

What the wind taketh it should give back once going the other two directions. UNLESS you get the old Okie. If you dont like the weather it will change in 5 mins. syndrome.

Belated - Maybe Dumb Question
Would it help the Insight doing the Marathon run to have two spares on the rear tires? Of course it would wear them out quickly.
Then there is removing the passernger seat....

Chuck, Insight for the most part has to remain as a Non-Modified Vehicle. So seat has to stay and the Correct Tires need to remain. The spare tire can be left out since a lot of owners do that.

Re: Insight Marathon Attempt: Live - Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 2006
Hi All:
___I had a huge write up in the form and the satellite went out
___OK, Randall is currently on the course for the single night shift run. We will meet up with him on the Eastern portion to drive to his home (full blown P&G). He is going to put the Insight up for the night in the garage with the block heater. At dawn, we go (Randall goes) again. We should have 150.0 locked up after 250 miles when Randall finishes up. The winds have died down to nothing but temps are falling fast …
Some pics!

Randall topping off at the launch point.

Topped off.

Randall on the first segment of many.

Randall first segment - 1.5L/100 km at 94.7 km.

150.0 mpg – 58.8 miles.

Wayne - segment #3 – 1.4L/100 km at 62.5 km.

1.4L/100 km – 219.7 km.
___Good Luck

Re: Insight Marathon Attempt: Live - Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 2006
Chuck,
The spare tire(s) for the Insight are not as efficient as the Potenza RE-92s. This has apparently been tested and proven. Those low rolling resistance tires (RE-92) at 50+ PSI love to coast!

This is 157mpg or Better?
Doing conversions at http://www.pege.org/fuel/convert.htm
Someone make sure I'm doing this correctly
Does the readout for 1.4L/100km really mean "1.4 to 1.499999L per 100km?
If the answer is yes, the mpg is between 156.8 and 168.01
If this is one vehicle and you do a fillup at the end - it might be at least 3% better. That is my experience. For example, 157mpg in the FCD would be at least 161.7mpg over a tankful.
I realize that only about 1.25 gallons have been consumed so far....

Re: Insight Marathon Attempt: Live - Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 2006
Hi All:
___The Insight has exceeded our expectations for day 1 with a relatively solid 156 + mpg tank. We drove both Insights (Randall’s and Louis’) for the first segment to compare notes and just in case … On our night practice run(s) last night, I had a recal within 3 miles of leaving Randall’s home. I am more then a touch gun shy about running his Insight through a night shift with that experience. During the day, Randall’s Insight can sing with the best of them yet has a personality all its own when compared to Billy’s, Bradlee’s, Justin’s, Louis’ and my own from days gone by. Randall, Louis and I had to work through the differences and let her take us where she wanted to go is all
___Now back to this afternoons post lost to the ether. Because of our concern for the Insight’s 12V system, we are only running a single night shift to keep our mileage schedule. With that, Randall is best qualified to maintain a tight SoC at night. Louis and I both know this tightened SoC control leads to a lower FE segment and that Randall can camp on a 1.4L/100 km segment. We just need to nail down distance so as to try and finish up on Sunday afternoon/evening. We also thought it was best to let Randall take his Insight home, keep it in the garage plugged in for the night. We may rethink this tomorrow but we will see how it goes. Our turnover should be much quicker given what we have all learned from one another today and we will be starting at dawn so as to get those miles up. By the time Justin arrives, the tanks FE should have settled out and we will have an even better idea as to when she may run dry? At the current tanks FE, we are going to have to run closer to 325 miles/day then the 260 we did today. Dawn to dusk plus one night shift should take care of the miles but it will be interesting whatever happens.
___Finally, this may be the Insights swan song but I sure hope it will not be the last. The Insight community has everything to do with this weeks event and we are doing our level best to pay that experience back as well show the world what the masterpiece otherwise known as the Honda Insight can be driven too. Let us hope the rest of the world sits up and takes notice?

258.9 miles @ 156.x mpg’s so far.

The Honda Insight on its way home after a spectacular first day …
___Good Luck
___Wayne
