Vehicle color matters when its hot!
Well yesterday i got home after a long day on the road where I hit some mega slow traffic waves and stuff, it was a little warm, but i didn't even think of turning on the AC.
I get home and Jack tells me it is 97 degrees! i said, you mean 87 right? (87 is considered quite hot here in the northland) No I checked and it was 97! Record heat for this time of the year in Minneapolis. i was mystified, normally when it is this hot I am miserable without AC or all the windows down. i couldn't figure it out!
Well i found out today it is because my ranger is white! the last two trucks where a dark blue and black. If you put your hand on the roof on a hot day it would burn. i put my hand on the roof today while it was 93 and it barely felt warm even with the sun beating down on it all day! cool!

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
certainly true . white reflects a lot of photons compared to black and darker colors which absorb more.

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
On our Florida vacation, when I picked out our rental Prius....
White and on purpose.
I had a choice of a few others, Red, Black, and some other dark color. I chose the white to avoid the AC hit on FE.
it Worked, I think we ran the AC only 1 time.

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
I have a Black car and yes it heats up quite quickly in bright sunlight.
I've gotten in the car in bright sun with the temperature in the high thirties and the interior was in the high fifties - low sixties. Summer when I have the car in Fl. it is brutal. Get out of the car in a parking lot. Go into a store for fifteen minutes and come out to a rolling sauna.

Interior colors matter too. My dark fabric interior heats up so quick. All I can do is just have good window tint.

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
This is the time of year when it would be nice to have a yellow car here. Everything's covered with pollen.

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
we need Camelion (sp) paint.
Dark in AM / Winter for faster warmup..
Light in Summer / Daytime to keep heating minimal.
"Transitions Lens" paint if you will.

Re: Vehicle color matters when its hot!
And me with a black Ranger.
I knew this long ago. I drove a white car when I was stationed in Turkey.
Air conditioning is horribly expensive in Turkey, so almost none of the cars have it. When the temps normally hit 140 in the summer...
Almost all the cars in Turkey are white becuase of this.
