This is what a prius can do!

I originally got the prius to replace my Subaru Outback - it has almost as much room and do almost as much (wish it had AWD or better traction control!) Here's a shot from a trip I took last week - 3 17' kayaks (1 extra for the ferry trip to avoid the overheight charge on the Honda Element parked behind), 3 people and all gear for a 5 day winter wilderness kayak trip! 500 miles of freeway driving, two ferry rides, 300 miles of windy mountain roads and 50 miles of potholed gravel logging road. Still got 35 mpg! The car handled well with the load!
Still thinking about a trailer for this kind of situation. Should get better mpg, but the hassle and extra cost on the ferry would be the downside.

Wow. Talk about using the full capacity! Fortunately, those kayaks are at least a little bit aerodynamic - better than the usual boxy car-top carriers.

This is what I'm praying for. If the 2010 Prius cargo capacity can nearly match a Suby wagon (not counting the window-level air in back), then my 'fleet' weighted efficiency can meet the new 2020 standards this year. The Suby will only be needed when chain requirements are in effect. I'm convinced, DW is not. |

GREAT POST Will! A picture is worth a thousand words and your picture truly proves that to be true.
Now for the naysayers to dispute the capabilities of a Prius.

Hi Mike,
Sorry, no pic of the inside. I had the 60% back seat down flat and all the space there and in back was filled to the roof. Also had about 15 gallons of water in the floor well of the right back seat!

I've found that I can car camp in the Prius, and I'm 6'3". Just lay the back seats down, push the front seats all the way forward and fill the back foot wells with gear to match the back deck level! Also, I can get my 8'2" whitewater kayak inside for longer trips alone - no penalty on mpg that way!
