Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – April 5, 2009

US based 2010 Ford Fiesta 5-door – Under the US guise, less than $14K to start and should provide 35 + mpgUS combined.

New York, NY. -- The 2009 World Car Awards winners' press conference at the New York International Auto Show is scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2009. Announcing the annual World Car of the Year awards at the New York show is a fitting finale to the International Auto Show season that begins each fall with either the Paris and/or Frankfurt motor shows.

From an initial entry list of fifty-one (51) all-new vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of ten finalists, the top three contenders for the 2009 World Car of the Year title was announced today the international accounting firm KPMG. Included in the elite list was three vehicles not available in the US but proven both in the hands of journalists and the consumer world wide. Meaning everywhere else

2009 World Car of the Year finalists
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Toyota iQ
  • Volkswagen Golf VI
To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the contender had to be in production and available to the average consumer on at least two continents during 2008.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of fifty-nine (59) top-level automotive journalists from twenty-five (25) countries around the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work.

Three additional winners for the World Performance Car, World Green Car and the World Car Design of the Year will also be announced at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday, April 9, 2009.

To be eligible for the 2009 World Green Car of the Year award, a vehicle had to be available in at least one major market during 2008. The vehicle or the green technology could be in production or an experimental prototype with potential near-future application, provided that it was released for individual or press fleet evaluations in quantities of ten or more during 2008. Tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry), aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle's environmental responsibility, were all taken into consideration.

Due to the complexity of some of the 'green' technologies, three (3) green experts were appointed by the World Car Steering Committee to extensively review all documentation and specs associated with each candidate. They were asked to create a short-list of five finalists for review by the fifty-nine (59) jurors in their second round of voting in February.

The fifty-nine (59) member jury chose the following top three finalists for the 2009 World Green Car of the Year award include the following:
  • Honda FCX Clarity
  • Mitsubishi iMiEV
  • Toyota iQ
Top Three finalists for the 2009 World Performance Car of the Year award, presented by Mobil1, include the following:
  • Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
  • Nissan GT-R
  • Porsche 911 Carrera
Now in their sixth year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the most prestigious, significant, and credible programs of their type in the world.

The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of pre-eminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. There is no affiliation with, nor are the awards in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.

If POS tranny Nissan takes the sports title someone needs to be shot. Then shot again just to be sure they be dead.

IMO Chevy deserves the title for at least being far more welcoming to aftermarket and track enthusiasts. Nissan has done near all possible to ensure the GT-R doesn't become another Fast & Furious icon.

As much as I like the Golf VI, I think the Fiesta is a more significant car and more worty of the award.

Re: Final Three in “World Car of the Year” announced

Wonder what the track record of this bunch of anonymous "experts" is? What were the top picks from previous years?

(Sorry, but I guess I've become rather jaded with the picks from some of the other so-called experts in other polls, like the Tahoe Hybrid).

Re: Final Three in “World Car of the Year” announced

Hi Chibougamoo:

___This system appears to be far more above board as last year; the Mazda2 was selected as the WCOTY while the BMW118d was selected the World Green Car of the Year. Neither of those vehicles are available in the US! The same with this years crop of candidates other than the Clarity. I hope the Fiesta takes the Car of the Year and the Clarity and the MiEV tie for Green Car of the Year. Stephen Ellis deserves Kudo's for helping the Clarity make its US debut and the MiEV... Well let us just say that BEV is efficient as all get out plus fun to drive

___I find it odd that they vote the "World Car of the Year" in NY with the Geneva Show just finishing up last week however???

___You can find more information at World Car of the Year.

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Final Three in “World Car of the Year” announced

IMO the Fiesta wins in the looks and probably the sales department easily, but the iQ holds the most innovations and will be seen as important vehicle; changing the way cars are built; while the Fiesta will be forgotten.
