Are there any homebrewers on the forum?

Just wondering if there are any folks around here who enjoy the art and science of brewing their own beer. I know that there are other forums out there for the hobby - heck I'm a member of a few, but its always nice to connect with people wherever possible.

I brew a mean vat of chicken broth, but that's about it.

No shame in that - I likes me some good ol' chicken stock from time to time as well.......I also happen to like fermented and hopped barley stock -

Re: Are there any homebrewers on the forum?

I'm gonna look into homebrewing one of these days. I'm not sure of the cost though. It looks like you get about 5 gallons when you brew it. I need to know the cost of the supplies. The stuff that you can use again and again, and the stuff that you have to buy every time.

If anything, I'm guessing that home brewing won't be cheaper than buying a 24pack of Lonestar for $12, but that it will probably cost slightly more while yielding something much better in quality.

Re: Are there any homebrewers on the forum?

I have done it a few times with good results. It's been a few years but I wouldn't mind giving it another shot. What used to hold me up was chilling the wort, and I just haven't gotten around to doing up an ice chest to get a decent cold break. Air cooling isn't quick enough, especially around here. Hmm...suddenly I think I have some time on my hands.

IIRC, the math worked out to something like 50 cents per bottle for a 5gal batch. It might not be cheaper, but done right it's tastes better than anything I've had out of a can for a comparable price.

Yep, four or five times a year. It's a good task for a cold winter's day. I have to be careful or it could turn me into a bit of a bore/snob. I like using my leftover/spent adjunct grains in beer barley rye bread. Does that count as recycling?

Re: Are there any homebrewers on the forum?

Haven't brewed in a little over a year, no time as we're building a house. Will be moving in next month so my brewery will be back online a little after that. Have brewed over 10 years. kevin

Re: Are there any homebrewers on the forum?

Hey - Right On! I figured that there were bound to be a few homebrewers around here. Nice to see those of you who are - its cool to share more than one interest with folks on a forum. I brew with a friend - we split the costs and the spoils - we are set to brew tomorrow, which I'm looking forward to.
