Scangauge--Cheap Alternative?

I think it's a personal preference. I have a great OBDII program on my laptop that is set up like Jim describes. It actually records the data. You can link it with a gps to see what was happening at any given time on your commute.

I use the Scangauge 99.9% of the time due to the portability and what I want to be looking at instantaneously. I pull it out at work quite a bit and read the codes on friends and co-workers cars and set it up for them to use to let them get a personal "feel" for what I have been explaining.

Thats an interesting thread. But I will either have the computer behind me on the package shelf (Honda Insight) closed up and recording data, or on the pasanger seat ...if my wife isnt there. The Insight has an Fuel Consumption Display, Tach and Charge and Assist meters on the dash so that is all I need for driving. I sure wouldnt have it on the dash as I would consider that unsafe....even if he does beat the ticket.

I see. I have a scangauge mounted in my Insight (under the radio) for keeping an eye on the 12V status (for when I FAS) as well as coolant temp (because of my grill block). In the Elantra I really do need the consumption info directly in front of me as I don't have any built in gauges in that car.
