Toyota develops world's first rear-center-seat airbag
Is SRS technology going too far?
Wayne Gerdes – CleanMPG – Mar. 11, 2009
Toyota’s industry first center rear seat airbag shown deployed.
Tokyo, Japan – Toyota has developed a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) rear-seat centre airbag to help reduce the severity of secondary injuries incurred by rear-seat passengers in a side collision.
The new airbag is fitted in a large, fixed, rear-seat centre console that comes in a version of a Toyota model to be launched in Japan in the near future. When the vehicle is hit side-on, the airbag deploys from the top of the console to act as a barrier that helps lessen injuries caused by passengers colliding with each other or into the console.
Toyota has continued to actively develop and make available its collision safety technologies—including its early commercialization of SRS curtain shield and knee airbags—to enable its vehicles to better respond to a wider range of accidents.

If people view their cars as so safe to think they can speed everywhere they go and drive recklessly because they're always safe, yes. I don't want to see anyone be hurt or die, but making cars safer isn't making us any better drivers. And, we sure are paying for it not only in car prices, but insurance, wrecks, and the rubbernecking that goes along with it. Train drivers better or, offer more incentives for a good driving record or something to promote people to stop being boneheads.

It looks kind of important that the passengers stay in their separate spots. No kissing or you die!

So, nobody can sit in the middle seat? The picture leave more questions than answers, but its good to see they aren't sitting still on safety.

Re: Toyota develops world's first rear-center-seat airbag
What's next... the rear of the center console opens up and there is a large airbag for all three rearseat passengers... Airbags are becoming like cup holders, if you don't have 3 per passenger than you are not competing in the marketplace

Re: Toyota develops world's first rear-center-seat airbag
Why do the Civic Hybrid and the Civic DX, DX VP, & LX sedans come with a measly 2 cup holders, while the base Fit has a whopping 10 cup holders, this is crazy.
I don't mind counting the door water bottle holders as cup holders, but only after you give 4 real cup holders in a 4 or 5 passenger vehicle. Vans should have one holder per person.
The extra air bags, I'm not sure how I feel beyond the now typical 6 positions, front, front side, side curtain, rear side curtain. If they can save lives I'm pretty sure I'd want them all.
