Ford Hybrids: Another Side of the Story

"I received a number of hostile responses to my commentary on a couple of recent reviews of the Ford Fusion Hybrid."

Jeff Siegel - The Examiner - Feb. 24, 2009

Looks like Jeff got lots of good feedback on this article. --Ed.

Admittedly, I was a bit shocked at how the article was received. So in an effort to offer another side of the story, let's take a closer look at what Ford (NYSE:F) is offering for fuel-conscious consumers in the future.

On January 11, Ford announced a new electrification strategy involving three types of vehicles:
  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV)
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)
The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid falls into the HEV category. The vehicle boasts a 41 mpg fuel economy, and can drive in all-electric mode up to 47 miles per hour. That 47 mph is certainly more impressive than pretty much anything else we've seen on the road.

I suspect many of you are also familiar with the Ford Escape Hybrid. This hybrid SUV delivers 34 mpg city/ 31 mpg highway. For an SUV currently on the road, no other major automaker has delivered this kind of fuel economy. I do believe this is an instance where Ford was smart, and delivered what... [Read More]

Re: Ford Hybrids: Another Side of the Story

I really think that Ford may be the only automaker on the ball with strategies and viable options for multiple vehicle bodies going Green. They've started well with the Explorer, but if the Escape is as capable as this article states then they well may be what puts Dodge in the grave for good. 100 mpg hwy, 70mpg city seems a bit excessive, but if it can happen before the other automakers can produce their own versions... Game Over.

I think that having the variety of HEV, PHEV, and BEV vehicles will allow consumers the choice in what they choose to drive. Not everybody will want a completely electric vehicle. There just isn't enough range yet. But some with a short commute Will buy this. I have a 55 mile commute, so I would need something a little more rangy, so the Escape would be perfect for me.

Detroit needs to get moving on solutions soon, for all of the Big 3, because it looks like the Asians are motivated to push their versions into the US soon.

Re: Ford Hybrids: Another Side of the Story

I've gotta say owning both a Prius and MMH, the Ford implementation really is a joy. I've been aching to get behind the wheel of the FFH.
