Bleak Forecast on Fishery Stocks

By 2050, US fishermen may see a 50% reduction in Atlantic cod populations.

by James Morgan - BBC News Chicago– Feb. 13, 2009

This article points directly at climate change as a cause. Hopefully we will adapt. -- Ed.

The world's fish stocks will soon suffer major upheaval due to climate change, scientists have warned. Changing ocean temperatures and currents will force thousands of species to migrate polewards, including cod, herring, plaice and prawns. By 2050, US fishermen may see a 50% reduction in Atlantic cod populations.

The predictions of "huge changes", published in the journal Fish and Fisheries, were presented at the AAAS annual meeting in Chicago. Marine biologists used computer models to forecast the future of 1,066 commercially important species from across the globe.

"The impact of climate change on marine biodiversity and fisheries is going to be huge," said lead author Dr William Cheung, of the University of East Anglia in the UK. ...[Read More]

Even if you are a global warming skeptic, still consider sustainability. The World's population did not exceed a billion until 1930...80 years later it's over 6.5 billion, thanks in part to an oil-based economy.

Won't running out of oil solve global warming? Or at least the human caused part?

I'm still on the fence about how much is man made and how much is natural. Don't scientist say we have had several "mini-ice-ages" over the years? No one was buring oil then to cause those.

Anyhow, I am anti-pollution, regardless of warming effects.

Yes, Peak Oil will mitigate AGW, but it will also drastically limit the amount of fishing and farming (no fertilizer, no gas for tractors and boats)

Good statistic, but I don't think the Oil-based economy was that huge of a part. I'm pretty sure that the medical technology advances did that. Sure, petroleum based products helped, but I don't think they were a "main" cause.

Re: Bleak Forecast on Fishery Stocks

Sorry guys, these people are like weather forecasters. The change their forecast whenever it suits them. We are still using the terminology they taught us over a year ago, i.e. ‘global warming’. They have moved on, now that the oceans are cooling to ‘climate change’. It is whatever suites them.

It is really about politically power and getting financing for their particular research.

I drive a HCHII because it is one of the cleanest cars available, if not the cleanest. I want to do my part, but I do not want to be led by people who do not even remain consistent.

Frank

I am still skeptical of how much man contributes to global warming (we do cause some, but I am not convinced of how much)

However, I'll join you on the anti-pollution stage.
