Five years of flawless performance

Five years ago yesterday, I picked up my 2004 Prius, Package #7, Millenium Silver.

Stats:
158,655 miles

58.8 MPG lifetime

109.3 MPG best tank (with a little help from my friends)
http://www.toyota.com/html/hybridsyn.../marathon.html

39.9 MPG worst tank (don't ask)
Mostly I get around 60 MPG.
I have a 135 mile commute so I put on about 35,000 miles per year.

This car continues to amaze me. It has only been to the dealer once, to perform a handful of recalls. Other than that, I just change the oil every 20,000 miles or so, change the air filter a few times and change the tires when they get worn out. Still running on the original spark plugs, brakes, belt, hoses, coolant, 12V battery and HV battery. I changed the trans oil at 130k and just replaced the front bumper cover that lost a battle with tire debris laying on the interstate.

I briefly considered trading it in for a 2010, but I just can't justify it. I look forward to the Gen 4 Prius. By then, I should have over 300,000 miles on my 04. Maybe then. Maybe....

Re: Five years of flawless performance

20K on the oil? Wow, I start getting antsy around 9 or 10.
.
Check your wheel bearings lately?
.
I just changed the plugs in my '04 last month, at about 96K; they
probably could have gone quite a ways more but the little iridium
electrodes *were* getting sort of pitted. I'll have nice close-up
comparison pix out at some point.
.
This spring I'll probably do the trans fluid again and think hard
about coolants, but both engine and inverter loops are still pretty
and pink so it's an iffy call. Oh, and I should at least *try* to
push some fresh fluid through the brake system. I have a spare belt
but the old one is still pretty healthy.
.
If nothing else it might all be good for the experience and fodder
to do up a "maint100k" webpage, dunno. I'm still wondering where
the truly right place is to dispose of old coolant and such.
.

Hi Dan:

___I suspect you will get another 150K out of your own little beauty before you are ready for a long range PHEV of some sort too!

___Thanks for the report as it is a good one.

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Five years of flawless performance

I think I see the thread you mentioned,

I had to let my beauty go because she still needed to be able to be sold certified for me to get enough money on trade out of it. There was some peer pressure but it wasn't strong enough to force a guy out to get another car payment.

I am not opposed to driving a competitive brand to work, but it can send the wrong message to one's customers. If the 2010 Prius had a Plug-in option out of the box I'd not have been able to maintain my composure this long. I'm glad Honda doesn't make a product to compete with the Aptera yet, I had wanted their hybrid model, but after watching my driving since moving out to my new place the only trips that electric vehicle wouldn't have been able to handle were my trip to the DMV for work once way out in the boonies, and the 48 State tour segment from Midlands Honda to the GA border. Also the numerous hypermiling out of state excursions.

Re: Five years of flawless performance

Those are some sweet numbers, especially the oil every 20k. Way to not waste.
