Toyota Shows Its Hypermiling iQ
Toyota Shows Its Hypermiling iQ
Keith Barry - Wired Autopia - January 29, 2009
Let's see what this little gem is really worth. --Ed.
Toyota wants to show the world that the too-cute-for-words iQ city car is even thriftier than the window sticker suggests. In order to do so without running afoul of the government, Toyota dispatched two lads on an 18-city hypermiling road trip around England and told them to blog about it.
The iQ is pretty impressive out of the box, returning a Prius-beating 55 mpg that would be 66 miles per Imperial gallon if you're on that side of the pond. But the guys managed to squeeze an amazing 504.2 miles out of an 8.5-gallon tank of petrol. Do the math and that comes out to 60 mpg (or 72 miles per Imperial gallon).
That's a 9 percent improvement. Pretty sweet, and they didn't even go nuts with the hypermiling.
According to one of the drivers, identified only as "Simon," the point of the challenge was to prove you don't have to draft semis or coast downhill to boost fuel efficiency. Small changes in driving habits can yield big improvements.
The challenge is part of the iQ Blog created by the marketing folks at iCrossing, and, like Chevrolet's "Living Large" and the Ford Challenge campaigns, it's an example of automakers using social media to publicize new cars. What makes Toyota's effort interesting is it doesn't feel like it was scripted by suits. The hypermiling challenge... [Read More]

Re: Toyota Shows Its Hypermiling iQ
Hi All:
___I am glad Toyota went though the trouble of placing these guys on the road but why couldn't they place some world class drivers behind the wheel? These guys are simply driving their iQ's if 9% above the NEDC is what they are receiving.
___Good Luck

I agree, Wayne. 60 mpg?
Try this, instead.
Or this one.

Re: Toyota Shows Its Hypermiling iQ
Does 9% extra even really constitute hypermiling?
If you were to get the wind in the right direction that day, or got lucky with the lights, I am sure you could get a 10% increase...
I am very impressed with the car... but not the "hypermilers" they chose...

Re: Toyota Shows Its Hypermiling iQ
Hi Matt:
___Yes, it does. If they can beat the Euro Urban/Extra Urban, they are "Hypermilers".
___Also consider that in the US, the iQ similarly equipped to what these guys are driving would be rated at ~ 45 mpg on the 08 EPA vs. 55 on the 1985 through 2007 EPA. Yes, they are hypermiling but the effort expended shows they really are not doing very well. More than likely, it is because they do not know what they are doing?
___Read some of the blog comments and it shows. If these guys were busting out great numbers, much of the criticism would be quelled.
___Good Luck
___Wayne

Thanks Wayne,
One thing very apparent from the blog comments is that a lot of people still love to waste gas
I guess America doesn't know what 10$ gas feels like... Maybe then, some of them would not think this car is such a bad idea.
Oh, and the one comment mentioned full throttle acceleration as being most efficient. My scangauge II tells me otherwise...
