Two more commutes

Well, the last few days have been exceptional for a lot of us. Those of us that are sucking up the heat and not using A/Cs are putting up record or near record segments.

I notice that I'm close to a 700 mile tank. When I started this tank I didn't plan on trying for a 700 but with the tank sitting at 630 miles and 3 bars left on the fuel display I figured I would take my own advice and go for it.

I'm always telling people there is at least 50 miles in the tank when you get to no bars so I'm going to trust in my own advice.

My round trip to work is a total of 33 miles (about 16.5 each way.) So I figure two more commutes and I'll have a 700 mile tank. I might top off after this one and go for an 800.

Some day I have to get up there with lakedude, hot georgia and the others and I think the only way to do that is push myself into territory I don't see very often.

Tom I've been to your fair city, in fact I was born in a burb. You are doing fantastic given the traffic you deal with in the windy city. I live in the middle of nowhere and work an odd shift with lighter traffic. If I lived in Chicago I'd be totally happy to see EPA at all.

Re: Two more commutes

Well, on the way in I saw my first low fuel warning and the Gauge showed only one bar. As I continued I got up to two bars and the low fuel light went off. I'm sitting at 653 right now. 3 more segments to go. I just have to keep telling myself that I know I have 1.5 gallons left and if I can keep a 55mpg average I will have no problem making it.

Re: Two more commutes

Drove to lunch today. Another 7 miles on the tank now up to 659.9 and 1 bar on the gauge again. Low fuel light illumniated again about 3/4 of a 1 gallon of gas needed to get to 700. I'm pretty sure I have that left

Re: Two more commutes

Thats what I kept telling everyone when they would make an attempt.

I'm taking my own advice and going for it. I will NOT fill up before 700 miles unless I run out of gas (which I doubt I will)

Re: Two more commutes

I've had the gas alert appear on my Insight just once in it's six years. I would bring a 5-gallon gas can if I was going to drive on empty. I must be chicken....

I will agree that if you can live without the A/C, great runs are possible....

Re: Two more commutes

LOL.

Do you have a bad experience related to running out of gas? I've run out before in previous cars and it seems that the amount below empty is a good amount.
