Would you still watch your favorite television program if you had to cycle for an hour before you could view it?
Couch potatoes will be horrified, but fresh advances in human-powered technology -- where users power appliances through their own motion -- could one day see a 'workout-to-watch' scenario become reality.

Re: Would you still watch your favorite TV if you had to cycle for an hour for it?
I sort of do it the other way around already. In the winter especially. I record Law & Order, House, or something like that and then play them back in front of a rowing machine or stationary bicycle to keep from going crazy during long workouts. DVD's work well too.
At the Y they have TV, but I zone out with an iPOD because none of the channels is interesting. CNN for an hour can be sheer torture, the same clips repeating over and over.
Worst of all was a gym years ago that had multiple TV's on one channel chosen by the staff. I remember one of the afternoon talk shows was doing a thing about "what to do when your kids are having sex with each other." Ick. Other times we got steamy bedroom scenes on the soaps. Ick. Occasionally we'd get cartoons, "Roadrunner" worked particularly well.

Some of the older Bally's gyms have a track going around the gym - I think that would be a good thing to come back...cheaper than treadmills that breakdown.

We could take it a step further. "Ishtar" for the rookies, "Godfather" once you hit 500 hours.

Marc,
Some of you runners will appreciate this humor....nearly every marathon cites if they BQ - i.e. if your time is fast enough for your age and gender you could run in the next Boston Marathon. Couch potatoes will now have to qualify to watch Boston Legal.

You need a poll option for those of us who don't watch TV.

that's me, too. i put NO since i don't watch TV, so there's no point. when i worked out in the gym, i was probably the only one who wasn't watching something on one of the TVs. you could change channels, but it's still all junk....at least in my always humble opinion.

I reworded the poll question to "show/album" so it's TV, video, iPod, radio, etc.

then i would say yes, if i could power my CD player, which always seems to have the batteries die on me in mid workout.

But how would you use a track to produce electricity? I guess one of those piezio-electric floors?
