Iowa Man Fired for Drinking Ethanol Fuel Denied Unemployment.

Hundreds of gallons of 190-proof alcohol were held in a 6-inch-deep holding pond that was about 30 feet by 24 feet.

AP - July 10, 2006

Drunk by drinking fuel ...

DES MOINES, Iowa - A man who claimed discrimination after being fired from an ethanol plant for drinking "automobile fuel" has been denied unemployment benefits.

Cory Neddermeyer, 42, was dismissed by Amaizing Energy in April. The Denison-based company produces ethanol fuel for vehicles in a formula that includes a high concentration of alcohol.

According to Neddermeyer, he showed up for work on April 21 and saw that there had been a spill of fuel alcohol. Hundreds of gallons of 190-proof alcohol were held in a 6-inch-deep holding pond that was about 30 feet by 24 feet.

The liquid had not been blended with gasoline.

"I am a recovering alcoholic, and I thought about the availability of this alcohol throughout the day," he wrote in a statement later provided to state officials. "Curious about the taste and its effects, I dipped into this lake of liquor and drank what I considered to be 2 to 3 ounces. The next thing I remember is waking up in Crawford County Memorial Hospital."

Neddermeyer was found by co-workers in an incoherent state. He was taken to the hospital, where his blood-alcohol level, according to state records, was reported at 0.72. That's almost twice the level considered potentially fatal for many adults.

Neddermeyer was briefly hospitalized for acute alcohol intoxication. His employer searched his work area and allegedly found three empty bottles that contained trace amounts of the fuel.

Holy cow that has to set a new BAC record. I've never heard of anything higher than 0.55 previously, largely on account of most folks start to die beyond 0.40. I wouldn't be surprised if he did some permanent brain damage with that little indulgance.

I did not think someone would try something stronger than Everclear.

Heck, you probably could run an E85 vehicle on everclear!

You might think that the guy might sample it first before going on.

Billboard today said alcohol kills 6.5 as many people as drugs...

Not to nitpick, but I have a bottle of Everclear in my freezer right now. It's 190 proof, so that's roughly equal. What's unfair is that refineries can mass produce 190 proof ethanol for something like $1.30/gal and 200 proof pure ethanol for $1.60/gal. My 750ml bottle of Everclear was $25, working out to $126.20/gallon. I'm not sure if the cost difference is due to taxes, or if Everclear is simply the most profitable company in God's green creation.

E85 cars rely on the easy light-off of gasoline to aid with starting, so you might still need to mix in gasoline with everclear to get it to start reliably in inclement weather. I still would not go the everclear route though. My local supermarket sells 91% pure denatured alcohol for something like a dollar a pint. That's a mere $8/gallon for comparison.

As for alcohol and deaths, that's not surprising given how much easier you can access alcohol, although I'd like to know if they properly account for all drug deaths, since I'd bet there's a ton of indirect deaths from drugs. At any rate, if we made all forms of drugs legal, I'm sure drug deaths would skyrocket since availability is a huge factor in getting yourself in to trouble in the first place.

I know there is not much to Everclear besides the alcohol. Remember one guy lighting his glass with a lighter, then after he put if out, drank it. He was a big guy but still didn't take too long to pass out.

Since we have had glue sniffers and people that make meth from SudaFed, we will probably have someone messing with E85.
