Hi Joe! Glad to have you with us.

Is that the 2.0 or 2.3L engine?
Manual or auto?

Be sure to read the articles listed below, and in the articles list to the left.

Re: mountain biker from ky in new mazda 3 HB

His profile says HB, so that means 2.3.

Your car probably has a black interior and a dark dash. Try to keep the interior cool by any means necessary. Get a sunshade for the windshield, crack the windows or pop the sunroof when parked. Park in shade or facing away from the sun. A mild tint job looks good and has functional benefits.

Not really hypermiling ideas, but that cars A/C is a little weak anyway, so anything you can do to keep the car cooler and resist the temptation to turn the A/C on.

Once that dash heats up, it gives off heat, and all the a/c energy goes to cooling off the dash and not you.

Hi Joe--

It's good to see more local guys going. To beat the heat I bought one of those bead mats you see all those Iranian cabbies using in those 90's movies. It actually works wonders. I haven't cranked the A/C since June 10 (100 degrees, 12 hour drive, and only after 7+ hours of my left arm getting sunburned!) and don't intend to do so again anytime soon.

If you get a chance you're welcome to come to the next meeting of the Northern Kentucky hypermiler's group. Most likely our next meet will be around Labor Day.
