To hit the goal of 1101 miles, I need to hold 77.4 or better for the rest of the tank
OK... So everyone I talk to about the Texas Tour immediately dismiss any achievement rendered without AC as nuts/insane/unsafe/sadistic. So I'm attempting a KiloTank with AC. Here are my rules. - AC off at night is OK
- AC off at launch (first 1 mile) OK
- AC off on final approach (last 1 mile) is OK
- If setting auto to 85 triggers the heater instead of AC, then no AC is OK.
- All other times, AC must be on and set to 85 or lower.
- When recording PIPs and Ticks (prius-speak) I'll record the moment of first occurrence.
So I filled yesterday at 12.5+ gallons
I'm calling a "tick" a drop in the "gas" XGauge. I currently have all 40 ticks (100%) but it did register a momentary drop to 39 yesterday, so, per my rules, that counts as one tick down.
31 miles; 76.7 mpg; Lost first tick ("gas" went from 100% to 97.5%).
I'm currently at 81 mpg, so as long as I can hold over 80, I should be in the realm of possibility.
UPDATE: 10/7/2008 @ 9:10 am CST - FINAL
Hit [1011] then hit [1101]
1101-1011

Re: Dan goes for KiloTank (with AC!)
That is a worthy cause, and a great challenge. Good luck!

That's one heck of a challenge, Dan! I'm looking forward to tracking your results.

Everything is possible in a Prius, by the way, why would someone say that's crazy talk?

People have gotten so soft. When i was a kid we didn't have AC and i lived.
I carry and pick up my 1year old son every day in the prius without AC and he doesn't seem to care.
Of course he could be a hypermiling baby

No kidding... I remember going on family vacations, mom, dad, brother, sister and self with 5 pairs of skis and 1 weeks winter supplies, all packed into a VW bug (yes bug, not bus). Drove from Central Texas to Colorodo, 4 years running. Try that today and the government would probably take your kids away for abuse and neglegance sighting that putting a kid in a car for more than 3 hours without a DVD Player and Game Console is wanten and blatnat abuse.
Right now people are looking for excuses. "I can't do that because....." This is just an attempt to take away one of those "because..." clauses.

Re: Dan goes for KiloTank (with AC!)
OK Dan, I will join you in an attempt for a 1000 mile tank. I will fill up today and try to stay up with you. I will trade you your A/C for my terrain. I have been getting in the mid 70's for a while now so I think I can punch it up to the low 80's by pushing it to the extreme.
I'll report back after I make my fill. I am going to fill it to the brim so it may take me a while at the pump. Any suggestions there.
[edit] Also, how do you set up the "ticks" in the xgauge. I have the 3.15* so none of my passive gauges work.

Re: Dan goes for KiloTank (with AC!)

ha... good luck... I tried to siphon before the Texas Tour and it's darn near impossible. There is a hair-pin turn in the gas tube designed to thwart siphon-ers. Couldn't get my tube to navigate the bend.

Re: Dan goes for KiloTank (with AC!)
oh well maybe next time.
We should seriously try as a group sometime that would be pretty interesting.
And would speak volumes as to the skill of the drivers here.
ok Dan next after the AC will be a January Kilo tank attempt
