Another ScanGauge Competitor? Or Imitator?

I saw this product while watching a segment on Motorweek. I checked out their website and this product lists for $119, which makes for an interesting comparison against the ScanGauge II.

As I see it from glancing at the product specs:

Pros:

• Real-time data logging to allow historical/trend reviews
• Downloads data via USB to PC
• Lower cost
• No cord required in vehicle

Cons:

• Does not provide feedback while driving, only after

Without real time feedback I would not view this as a serious competitor for the sg. At least not in terms of improving you FE.

The data logging and computer download of data is nice and I believe things that do this kind of stuff have be around for a while and were first sold to help parents track the driving habits of their teenagers.

I think a great accessory to the sgII would be a programmable datalogger stick that could be plugged into the unused port of the sgII, and with a removable memory card so the data could be transferred to your pc. It would be very nice to have all your data logged automatically to see long term trends.

That's been promised as an upgrade for quite some time. I didn't get to talk to Ron of Linear Logic last weekend at Hybridfest, but I haven't heard of any impending update. Once that addition comes, I can see fleet adoption of the SG2 taking off as operators and supervisors will want to improve and monitor driver performance.

I have a CarChip, and a Scanguage II.

I have not yet used the Scangauge to check and clear any trouble, I am assuming it will be a lot easier with the Scanguage. With the CarChip you hook it to the car, start the car and allow the chip to time to record the code. Then remove the chip, hook it to your computer check the code. Then clear the code from the chip, and program the chip to clear the code from the car when it is reconnected. Finally hook the chip back to the car start the car and allow time for the chip to clear the code. IF the check engine light comes back on, you need to start the process again to see if there is a 2nd code or if you still have the original issue.

Data logging with the CarChip is good. It can give you a nice chart showing speed, amount of acceleration, and how hard you used the breaks. Great data if you want to see if you kid is using the car to street race or hypermile. If you could hook a GPS in and include location along with speed date it would make that data a lot more useful. Without location you find your self looking at the charts trying to think where you were when it was recorded.

No question for me, I see the Scanguage as a great tool for improving mileage. The Carchip is not a bad product, just in my opinion NOT a competitor to Scanguage.

if you look at their site, they have another product called DriveRight that does some of what ScanGauge does, and has a GPS add-on module.

Yup, I did see that as well - but was WAY more expensive ($399 I think?). So I didn;t even bother referencing it. But if not for Scangauge, that probably would have been the next best thing.
