Great articles. I noticed that the Yaris and Fit are on both lists, so if I had to buy a new car today, I would give those two serious consideration.

While the Yaris isn't as FE as your Tercel, you will find the Yaris much easier to pull down good numbers with than the FIT. If FE is your primary concern there's no contest. It seems the average FIT owner has difficulty breaking 40 MPG, while this is very easy to do on the Yaris if you have any highway or low congestion driving.

Voodoo, Thank you for the comparison. When the time comes, I will also seriously consider switching to a manual tranny, since it is ideal for hypermiling, plus slightly cheaper.

In my part of the woods, the least expensive vehicles to buy right now are SUVs. Radio ads are offering some of those FSPs for $11K. New. And the ads actually state that "thanks" to the high gas prices, buyers can get these SUVs really cheap.

Snake charmers they be.

And people fall for it... that FSP they always wanted (Denali, Navigator, H2...) is within their reach. Now they have the vehicle to prove they have arrived in life. Ahh yes instant status symbol.

A status symbol, that is of course, ---> if they can afford to make it to their destination without running out of gas - or having to take a payday loan to fillup the tank.
