Re: scan gauge isues
Hmm. Gonna have to wait for the diesel crowd to get on this one. I think there are multiple settings for diesel cars but I'm not sure how to choose amongst them.

That's probably normal, if the low readings are at acceleration from a stop and the high numbers are when you're at speed. If you look at the average MPG for the trip, does it appear reasonable? If not, make sure you have the right engine size and fuel type set up. For fuel type, Diesel A and Diesel B do not refer to the type of diesel fuel, but the type of communication being used.

Re: scan gauge isues
If it were a gas car, I'd say that the 9999 was deceleration fuel cutoff. That is a feature of many modern gas cars. Are you sure that you went through the setup procedures correctly?
The instantaneous fuel economy does vary widely on all cars. Accelerating away from lights, I can get my, the FE is low. Leaving for first drive of day, when engine is cold, a initial drive away, when speed is 5-10 mph, the scangauge will report very small numbers. If the data works out wrong when you fill up, you may want to visit the ScanGauge website for some customer support. Unfortunately I don't know much about diesel functions, so any specific setup info would be questionable.
