New Member - 2008 Honda Civic Ex

Hey everyone! I just joined this site today. This week I traded in my 2006 Acura RSX Type S for a 2008 Honda Civic Ex. I loved my RSX but the dam thing sucked gas. I never got above 25. Paid 4 dollars for a gallon of gas and the next day went out and got my new ride! I have about a 25 mile commute to work and then back so gas was killing me. I'm in the military so the only way I figured to overcome the gas problem was to get paid more which wont happen in my current job or finally join the club! I tried to get a Honda Civic Hybrid but it was all sold out everywhere. So I settled on a Civic EX.

I'm new to the the hypermiling thing but am slowly applying the principles I have read on here. Happy to report that right now I'm getting roughly 42-45 mpg which is like astounding to me since this is considerably more then the stated city and highway mpg Honda says it will get.

Anyhow know whats the upper limit of of a 2008 Honda Civic Ex in terms of MPG? Thanks!

You can look your car up on fueleconomy.gov to find what the EPA's estimates are...

I have a 2005 civic. The mpg is 27/34 (I think) but was pulling higher than that... more like 37-38 and an occassional 40, until hypermiling "officially" and I recently pulled over 50!

(I did the same thing... went in for a hybrid, but came out with the ex

) Good litle car. Mines been a work horse, and I put it through alot.. I have over 84,000 miles in less than 3 years (August it will be 3) - WELCOME!

I would guess that the RSX wasn't the real gas problem, it was how it was driven. I have a 97 Honda Prelude (similar type car) and have always gotten at least 28 mpg, once I started diving more carefully it jumped to 33mpg. My first tank since trying more of the techniques was 36.4 and I think I'm going to be close to 40 on this tank of gas.

Hello and welcome to the club.

You should start by reading the article “Beating the EPA”.

Make sure you air your tires up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

Also, consider purchasing a ScanGaugeII. It is an invaluable source of information and will quickly pay for itself in fuel savings.

However, please be careful as hypermiling is addictive.

Eh I tried but never got good MPG. RSX Type S engine is pretty different from a Preludes. 210 HP 2.0l engine.

You can report your mileage on fueleconomy.gov to share it. The best I have gotten is 42 in the 08 Civic EX MT. I don't do much special, just drive quite slow on the interstate, around say 55mph. There's quite a few hills to and fro work. But I'm content with 42 for my commute. I know other people with Hondas have hit in the low 50s with fairly devout attention to hypermiling techniques. But there's too much traffic during my commute to safely do that.

Congrats on the new car and great numbers. I also have a honda civic EX, but it's the coupe with the auto trans (lower 5th gear). Around town I've been seeing high 30s low 40s using some of the more advanced hypermiling techniques. On the highway I've seen numbers as high as 55mpg when traffic is good.

My guess would be the upper limits are somewhere around 57-60mpg without making any modifications to the car (grill block and under panels) and have a pretty flat route. You could probably get higher on a short trip coasting down hill too.
