The guy that has the Mini-Van with Attitude

Hi All,

That's right! I'm Alan. The guy that has the "Mini-Van with Attitude". Well, it used to have an attitude but now it's just different kind of attitude. I'm from the North Texas area and I've lurked on this site way before the CNN article.

My daily commute to work is 0 miles. I'm one of the lucky ones that gets to work from home. However, every other weekend, I travel to Austin, Texas; twice. I rack up around 800+ miles on those weekends. In between, I may put 50 miles on the mini-van.

My main goal and why I joined the site is to see how well I can increase the highway mileage. By just slowing down to 60-62 mph, I've been able to increase my mileage. My best tank has been 27 mpg. The worst has been 22 mpg. My current goal is to get it to 30 mpg.

That's about it.

Alan

Hello and welcome to the club.

You should start by knowing your car’s EPA rating which can be found at FuelEconomy.gov and make sure to read the article “Beating the EPA”.

Next, make sure your tires are aired up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

Last, consider purchasing a ScanGaugeII. It is an invaluable source of information and will quickly pay for itself in fuel savings.

However, please be careful as hypermiling is addictive.

Sorry, but this is the minivan with attitude:

The best of the genre was Gus. May he rest in peace.

The MPV is a fun fan though.

Gus died?? Dear lord, I remember him from the mini-mopar days. That was back when I wanted to run the same garret turbo in my 2.2l turbo LeBaron convertible at 14lbs of boost. Then the thing went and blew through 2 head gaskets. That was the end of the LeBaron .

Re: The guy that has the Mini-Van with Attitude

Yes, I read somewhere that Gus died in a motorcycle accident.

They are probably on youtube somewhere also, but I have some downloaded video clips of turbo charged Caravans and Reliants doing 11 and 12 sec quarter miles and blowing away Corvettes, Mustangs, and Supras. It's perversely fun to watch!

My family once had an 87 LeBaron GTS turbo, all stock of course, but a nice car nonetheless.

That IS a minivan with attitude. The "Mini-Van with Attitude" was coined by my wife since I would, occasionally, pass 4 vehicles on two lane black tops that wouldn't pass a tractor going 10. My sons wanted to paint flames on it but I wouldn't since I didn't want to stand out in the crowd.

Re: The guy that has the Mini-Van with Attitude

Depends on the state, but sometimes it's not legal to pass that tractor doing 10 MPH. Here in NC we're not allowed to pass farm equipment on the secondary roads.

It's legal and expected in Texas. That's why our back roads have a shoulder big enough to be another lane.
