Thumbs up I got 65 MPG when I hypermiled!

Just to prove it, I made a YOUTUBE VIDEO that shows my journey from Hot Springs Arkansas to Tulsa Oklahoma.

It is hard to do such a thing while on the interstate. I had to slow down in some places (going up hill) but still made sure I did not cause the drivers behind me to slow down.

One of the most important things to remember is that HYPERMILEING IS TO LOWER GAS CONSUMPTION FOR EVERYONE

If you cause others on the road to slow down, speed up to pass you or change others driving habits to be worse...you are not a good hypermiler!

Slowing down and speeding up kills your MPG. Making others do such a thing kills their mpg and they, most likely, does not even know what hypermile means.

I at times have to make sure I stay with the flow of traffic so the over all oil and gas usage for everyone around me stays even.

Have a happy hypermile day!

Sean

Re: I got 65 MPG when I hypermiled!

Hi Sean:

___Welcome to CleanMPG and it is great that you got 65 over the distance!

___As for slowing and speeding up (DWL or even HS P&G), that is a std. tactic when and where appropriate and you will have to learn how to interact with others on the wide open spaces so as to not become an impediment. RR, RP (reverse passing), E-Flashers and even a WOT dive into the maintenance lane as a last resort (all in the far right lane of course) work so as to be as safe and courteous as possible while still being legal.

___Next goal, pull 65 + year round

___Good Luck

___Wayne

When I am driving between the min & max speed limits on a multi-lane highway in the righthand lane, I do not consider it to be forcing someone to slow down because they don't look ahead and use the left lane accordingly. Not to mention those that will purposely come speeding up behind you to ride your bumper when there is plenty of access to other lanes to pass, this probably falls under me causing them to change their habits for the worse. Sorry, I respectfully disagree.

Re: I got 65 MPG when I hypermiled!

It is all a matter of degree and common sense - I constantly look in my rear view mirror to determine if I am causing chaos behind me.

If traffic is light and people can easily have enough room to pass me - I will go normal hypermiling speeds. (50 - 57 )

If traffic is heavy and going 50 - 57 causes a backup behind me - I'll speed up enough such that people will not bunch up behind me.

I especially try and work with Truckers who ( after all ) trying to make a living.

On the interstates, I'll use my flashers to signal to a Trucker coming up from behind that he'll want to pass - I try and do it when the trucker is 1/2 to 3/4 a mile away - that gives him plenty of time to set up a safe and smooth passing.

Common sense goes a long way.

Way to go Sean! I agree about adjusting speed for traffic condition, but mostly to avoid setting off potential road ragers. I once had one intentionally swerve in front of me and slam the brakes, which was rather scarey.

Re: I got 65 MPG when I hypermiled!

Very cool video, Sean! Can you provide us with the specific techniques you personally used to achieve this mileage figure? As a regular visitor to this site, I'm pretty familiar with multiple techniques discussed here, but was just curious how "advanced" you decided to go for this particular trip. I'm seriously considering an HCH to replace my current Accord, and the large majority of my miles are on the highway...

Red face Re: I got 65 MPG when I hypermiled!

Thank you for all your responses... I agree... I believe that if you are a TRUE HYPERMILER... you will hypermile for EVERYONE...which means not bunch up traffic behind you... make sure truckers know you are slower than the rest of the traffic...and of course...If you cause someone to SLOW DOWN (which is bad for hypermiling as we know) you are causing more fuel to be burnt by the guy that is NOW MAD AT YOU and speeds around you... plus, he might slam on the breaks in front of you to make you mad.

I am making a short DOCUMENTARY on hypermiling and the rules of the road...trying to get some "EXPERTS" like police officers, mechanics and other hypermilers to help out.

I will keep you all informed

Safe and happy hypermiles

Sean
