Hello hypermilers

I learned of this site from reading Readers Digest. I have been reading some of the posts and it is very interesting. At least I knew who Wayne Gerdes was when he was on GMA drving the Prius from Chicago to NY. on 8.9 gallons of gas, that was neat. I recently bought a 1998 Honda Odyssey to use in my vending business and am averaging 27 to 30 mpg. I hope to improve. I was drving my dodge diesel truck but 22 mpg at $4.85 a gallon is just too much. When I bought it diesel was less than reg. gas now it is $1.10 more (unless the prices have changed since noon).

Hi and welcome to the forum. You may want to start with this article if you haven't already read through it.

Also, make sure your tires are aired up to the maximum pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall.

Re: Hello hypermilers

Hi XMR,

Wayne was recently on CBS Early Morning Show doing that Chicago to NY drive. I not sure he has been on GMA or not. You can look it up on the website here, including links to the video. Or just go to CBS website and search for Wayne Gerdes.

I think there probably is some controversy over the 8.9 gallons, but not the 71 mpg. 790 miles at 71 mpg is 11.1 gallons.

Re: Hello hypermilers

with only a 12 gallon tank that was close. I know he said he was concerned with running out.

Re: Hello hypermilers

Hi XMR,

Especially with the Tank in the Prius, which has an internal rubber bladder. The rubber does not stretch as much in cold weather. That morning was in the high 40's hear in Chicagoland. The only time I get 11+ gallons in my Prius is when its 90 F outside.

Re: Hello hypermilers

Hi Xmr:

___Welcome to CleanMPG and I am sure your FE will pick up handily after a few hours here! That is why we are all here for the most part

___As for the Chicago to NY -- Prius highway challenge … Near the finish, I was sitting at 10.9 gallons consumed (love that X-Gauge ), 2 pips still showing, 71.3 mpg per the SG-II and 71.0 on the MFD while staring at the NY City skyline just across the river. I was asked to pull over and wait at the George Washington Bridge while a film crew arrived to vid the drive into Manhattan which took over an hour to arrive At fillup two days later in downtown, after at least 10 reboots and multiple cold starts from the parking garage guys, the final numbers were 69.95 mpg per the actual odo and fill, 70.3 per the SG-II and 70.1 per the MFD IIRC.

___Donee, for the fill up, I carried all my fuel in gasoline containers while I almost ran the Prius dry. I specifically asked that A&M not fill after its drive in form MI the day before and I drove another 45 miles into downtown from my home so I had just 1 pip showing. From the parking garage early that morning before heading to my hotel room, I topped her off with the containers. I then drove to the Adler Planetarium that morning and topped her off 3 times while bringing her up to 171 degrees (a little buffer above 157/159 for any long glides around downtown) coolant temp and verifying I was in S4 before the CBS people sealed up the tank and I launched.

___Good Luck

___Wayne
