Again, oil and gas prices hit records; crude nears $120

Gasoline sales have fallen 2% to 11% a month since December in a study by 13 owners of stations scattered across the USA.

James R. Healey - USA Today - April 23, 2008

Oil and gasoline prices continued Tuesday to set all-time highs — with oil topping $119 a barrel and gasoline reaching $3.511 a gallon.

Responding to a weak dollar and concerns over supplies light, sweet crude for May delivery rose to a trading record of $119.90 before retreating to settle up $1.89 at a record $119.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The AAA and the Oil Price Information Service reported a U.S. gasoline average of $3.511 Tuesday.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration, which use a different method, said Monday that the average price for regular gasoline across the USA was a record $3.508 a gallon, eclipsing the inflation-adjusted peak of $3.413 set in March 1981 — $1.417 back then.

The two surveys emphasize what Americans already know: However the price is measured, fuel is more expensive than it's ever been.

Drivers are cutting back. Gasoline sales have fallen 2% to 11% a month since December in a study by 13 owners of stations scattered across the USA that are not direct competitors, says Jay Ricker, a member of a study group. He's president of Ricker Oil, which runs 30 Marathon and BP stations in Indiana.

"People aren't getting used to these prices," he says. "I'm hearing more comments, people saying, 'I need to get a more fuel-efficient car next time.' "

Expect no relief. EIA predicts regional averages as high as $4 in the next few months. And the price of crude oil, which EIA says accounts for about 72% of the gas price, continues to zoom. It closed Nymex trading Monday at a record $117.48, up 79 cents from Friday.

Americans already were feeling pinched, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll five weeks ago, when gasoline averaged about $3.28. About 63% said fuel prices were a hardship. That's the biggest percentage recorded since 2005 by the poll, which has asked the question since February 2000.

The exceptions: 69% in late August 2005 and 72% in September 2005, when Hurricane Katrina disrupted oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. It made landfall in Florida on Aug. 25and sent gasoline to a then-record $3.069 weekly average by EIA's Sept. 5 report.

The prices also have made big SUVs hard to sell — both for automakers and for owners who want to trade down.

Average prices for full-size SUVs in March tumbled 15.4% from a year earlier at wholesale auctions where dealers buy and sell vehicles, and large pickups were down 12.6%, after adjustments for miles and other factors, according to Thomas Webb, chief economist for Manheim Consulting, a unit of the company that operates many big auctions.

Vehicle auction prices overall were down 5.6% in the same period, he says.

The collapse of big trucks and today's tougher credit standards are savaging new vehicle sales. April sales will fall to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of just 14.7 million, down from 16.2 million a year ago, forecasts Itay Michaeli, analyst at Citigroup Investment Research.

Hi Editors,

I think that Shell picture is a bit dated. I filled up this week at Shell for $3.759 here in west suburban Chicagoland. Prices have come down a few pennies since then, but still $3.499 is somewhat lower than the street price in many places.

Good!

The marketplace is doing what the government has steadfastly refused to do: cut down on the number of gas-hogs on our roads.

Re: Again, oil and gas prices hit records; crude nears $120

Hi Reid:

___Another excellent find!

___If anything, driving habits in what we own and drive today will change and more importantly, their will be a massive swap to much more fuel efficient models in the years ahead as fuel prices possibly stick in the #3.50 - $4.00 range and continue to climb globally as time moves on. That really depends on the Cellulosic companies actually producing something of value for the $1.00 per vs. the BS promotion going on.

___The crux of the matter is probably disheartening to the domestic auto manufacturers knowing they rely on the FSP’s to make or break their bottom line (glad I am not them?) yet offer little in the way of fuel efficient small vehicles for the public to consider.

___A bit OT but even the most fuel efficient manufacturer (Honda) announced on Friday it expects total auto sales to be off something like 2%. Watching Acura sales over the last year, there is not a single bright spot in the entire lineup! Rightfully so too given the most fuel efficient is the TSX with the hopped up Accord I4 motor with lower FE than even the brand new Accord V6 FSP

___Donee, that pic was actually taken in downtown LA last Nov. and I thought it was high than and now it is the national average! I am trying to collect pics of fuel in the $3.75 - $4.00 range for these types of news items but prices have risen so fast that my cupboard is almost bare! If you have any nice shots of local stations prices, by all means send them our way as we really need them!

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Again, oil and gas prices hit records; crude nears $120

What we are seeing is the demand effects of the price rises of 2-3 years ago. Believe it or not, that is how long it takes for people's behaviour to change in reponse to changes in the price of gas.

aka: short vs. long term price elasticity of gasoline.

We should expect rather dramatic changes in consumer's consumption of gasoline over the next 2 years - Per capitia consumption should drop circa 50% from 2002-03 levels.

Gas prices is doing what no number of police and government regulations could.

Cars have all slowed down (all under 70 from my experience now.) and now Fsp sales are plummeting.
