IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

Had something odd happen on the way out of the parking garage. It was late Friday and the place was totally deserted so I took it a bit hotter than I normally do. My exit velocity out of the garage was 20 mph while in an EV override NICE-off glide. So I disengage EV and start the S1 crawl. Well since I was already going 20 mph and had 5 bars I went ahead and committed to an acceleration curve instead of holding at 18 mph as I normally do for S1. I accelerated at 1 kph per second and at about 22 mph the IGN numbers jumped from negative (normal S1 state) to +6. Pleased that I must have managed to get out of S1 in 15 seconds, I hit the EV button. "Beep Beep".. denied. I keep the acceleration curve of 1 kph per second, IGN still at +6 and charge is going INTO the battery! WTF, Positive IGN, Positive acceleration, SoC increasing, How exactly is this still S1. About 5 seconds later the IGN numbers bounced to 15 and I cram the EV with the satisfaction of the normal engine cut-off.

Does anyone have some slow downhill grades they could test this on? Since I don't have SoC on my gauge It was at 5 bars. But my 5 bars could be your 4 bars, 5 bars or 6 bars, depending on whether your SoC was on the way up or down when you turned the car off.

This is not on my IGN list and I've never seen positive IGN while in gear in S1. Positive 3 pops up when I'm in an S1 NICE-on glide though. Never seen +6 while in D though.

Something else interesting is that IGN 14 is also what my city driving Pulses seem to hit consistently when at 6 bars. It's a whole lot easier to hold an IGN number than an RPM number, and the RPMS seem to self regulate to the IGN number.
  • IGN: 15 = Close second to IGN 14, and allows for longer distances.
  • IGN: 16 = Hardly ever saw it at 6 bars, seemed to always be on the way to 17 or 15
  • IGN: 17 = FE falls off here, and I recommend avoiding 16 and 17. Possible loafing
  • IGN: 18 = WS Pulse rate. This is a perfect pulse rate if your gonna WS P&G. Pulse at IGN 18, Glide at IGN 5.
  • IGN: 19+ = Very fuel thirsty, I recommend avoiding these unless your in a "gotta floor it" moment.

I haven't got the scangauge hooked up but what you are describing sounds a lot like the way I normally handle S1. With the right touch on the pedal I can usually maintain a slow but steady acceleration with energy flowing into the pack rather than out of it. (This makes a big difference for me after work because a nominal or better SoC gives me the good numbers on that first leg at 55mph.)

Well what I did was basically to start off with a deep draw from the pack to the wheels. That was from about 15 mph to 20 mph. At some point above 20 mph the arrows switched and went into the pack (from the wheels) and the IGN went from -10 to +6.

Re: IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

Hi Dan:

___Although I do not have any downhill’s long enough to get up to 22 mph, what about the following scenario? Since you have ~ 8 seconds from ready before the ICE starts from cold, why not accelerate up to 22 mph briskly off the pack with the ICE running for maybe 2 or 3 seconds at most by the time you reach that speed. If it is a 22 mph limit, burning off a few % of Soc for that initial accel to get through S1makes perfect sense to me since you are going to burn about half as much in a creeping accel and throw the fuel away for the 57 second timer anyway?

___Good Luck

Re: IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

That's kinda what I did. I was doing my normal S1 creep and I decided.. well **** it. I basically turned off the energy display and punched it. When I got up to 25 mph or so, IGN went to +6 while I was still accelerating and the energy display reported that power was going INTO the pack not out of it.

Hi Dan:

___If anyone owes you a debt of gratitude, it is the Prius nation as you continue to look for the Prius’ every angle. Personally, I have the feeling you are onto something very important here. Let me add I am grateful to you as well because this is cutting edge stuff and I absolutely love the discussion and your findings

___Good Luck

Re: IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

I'm kind of in the same boat as Wayne wrt hills big enough to reach 22 mph. Due to the fact that my driveway is ~.05 miles long, it's probably also too far to reach in 8 seconds. What I will try to do is, EV out of the garage and coast in N down to the road then stop and power down. Then I will power up and take off and try to reach 20+ by the time the ICE fires up while watching the IGN values. Does this sound right? I just want to make sure I'm clear before I try it.

Re: IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

Well I just tried it again and on the way home and didn't see the anomaly. What I had done the first time is:
  1. Powerup
  2. Engage EV
  3. NICE-off glide down hill and out the garage
  4. At 15 mph take the turn on to the main road and disengage EV
  5. Accellerate at .6 mph/sec (1 kph/sec)
  6. Note at about 22 mph IGN jumped from -10 to +6
  7. Continue acceleration curve up to 30 mph (if necessary)
  8. Engage EV when IGN goes into the teens somewhere between 22 and 30 mph.
Now that I have an SGIIx I can watch SoC to see what happens. The fact that I can't reproduce it may lead to the "Dan your Nuts" vote on this one, but I was fairly sure I saw it.

PS: Thanks for the encouragement Wayne

Re: IGN +6 in S1? New Prius Hack?

Dan have you seen the page on the thermistor hack on prius chat?

This may be the answer to your desire to avoid s1:

http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-mo...stor-hack.html

I want to try but would like to see instructions and part numbers that people use.
