My Garmin 1490T has this feature. The first time I was playing with gas saving mode if was an interesting drive. The unit was sending me on what I thought was a wild goose chase. It wasn't long before I realized that my Scan gauge was showing an increase in fuel mileage as the trip continued on.
That little box shows me more and more short cuts that I never knew existed.
One time mine took me off the highway, to a stop sign, then immediately back on the highway. I can only guess it was due to lower speed limits on the access road.
