Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
...however, they are still dismissive of PHEVs
Chuck Squatriglia Wired Dec. 26, 2007
Historically the greenest automaker, but many recent misteps...will they rebound? We'll see. -- Ed.
Honda brought the first gas-electric hybrid to America when it launched the funky Insight in 1999, but it was soon overshadowed by the Toyota Prius and Honda's been trying to catch up ever since.
After eight years playing second-fiddle, Honda has decided enough is enough.
Company president Takeo Fukui says Honda is investing heavily in hybrids and insists the race "has just begun." The technology's first phase was all about cultivating a green image, Fukui says, clearly taking a swipe at Toyota. The next phase will emphasize making the vehicles more affordable and fuel efficient, he says, and Honda has two cars in the pipeline that he promises will challenge Toyota's eco-supremacy.
"The real full-scale hybrid competition will start from now," Fukui says.
Fukui's got his work cut out for him. The Prius is synonmous with hybrid technology, and 79 percent of the gas-electric vehicles that rolled out of American showrooms last month were Toyotas. Just one in 10 were Hondas, and the company has discontinued the Insight and Accord hybrid. Yet during his year-end speech to employees, Fukui predicted hybrids will account for 10 percent of Honda's sales by 2010. To reach that goal, Honda will have to sell some 400,000 hybrids a year

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
If they can make an attractive hybrid I think their sales will be where they want them to be.
The HCH is an attractive car, I would've bought one but I couldn't find a 06+ for the price I was wanting to pay.
This CR-Z concept looks great. If Honda makes it I think it'll be a huge hit.

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
To that end, Fukui confirms Honda will offer a subcompact hybrid in 2009. It will feature a smaller, lighter engine to improve fuel economy and a lower price than the Civic hybrid. Although it's been rumored that the car will be a variation of the Fit, Honda says it will be a new model.
Perfect!
The Prius will haul anything I need to haul, so a smaller hybrid would be perfect as a second car.
Put a comfortable seat in it, Honda, and it will find a place in my fleet of vehicles. In fact, assuming it's comfortable, the Prius will become our second car...

It is interesting to note that the comments to that article largely follow the perception of CleanMPG readership...
I'm looking forward to seeing what Honda has up its sleeve -- here's hoping they've got something mighty impressive in store!

I just hope that can release something before I need a new car.

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
Hi All:
___Honda might run into a small problem in that they are trying to hit a moving target. The 09 Prius-III is going to be making yet another advance so Honda had better have some great FE, tech or really small prices heading our way to make that 100,000 hybrids a reality. When we see 2010 or 11 Corolla’s w/ the next gen HSD-II in them for under $18K, everyone here including Honda will know what the target is. Better yet, it would be great to see everyone looking at Honda as the target with a Fit sized IMA equipped mild hybrid at $16K or so
___Good Luck
___Wayne

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
Personally, I'm hoping for the sub-$20k subcompact hybrid to replce my HCH. As much as I like my car, I'd love to own something a little smaller (ie. easier to park) and with somewhat better gas mileage.

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
OK enough with the corporate lip speak. Just build me a freaking CR-Z with a MT or get the oil burning monster here in a small car. Not some butt ugly 5 door.

Re: Honda Gearing Up to Unseat the Mighty Prius
And while they're at it, they need to become quite a bit more
open with regard to their diagnostic protocols, i.e. bloody
standardize already and *document* it. Having to buy a ton of
extra doodads or a whole 'nother tool just to do Hondas is going
to kill its market for those who ask "can I have them serviced
anywhere".
