But… I voted handgun.
Because you said:

There is NO financial reason to buy a handgun. If you want it, you want it…. You will always want it. You don’t even want the SGii for yourself.

If you buy the SGii for your wife you will still want the gun.
If you buy the gun you will likely get that “want” filled. Then you can get a SGii later and not wonder about the gun.

OR.. don’t even consider them in the same gift category.
Handgun = good fun gift to yourself.
SGii = Financial, educational, and life style choice
Oh, believe me, the SGII would be for ME - I just happen to drive a '93 is all. I'd end up driving her car a LOT more if I bought one.

At an engineer's fun event in my area, one game they had involved shooting BBs at a "dartboard" with a homemade air gun, with a metal plate for the center so a hit makes a distinctive sound. The gun only ran at 100PSI (common air compressor) and it managed to dent the plywood of the dartboard. An air gun with an operating pressure of 4500PSI would be able to do some impressive damage! Or scavenge some large capacitors and build a railgun. On second thought, those capacitors might be more useful in a homemade hybrid vehicle.
I have buddies that already have a Gauss gun (and several Tesla Coils). It fires a 1/4" or 3/8"(can't remember) metal rod 2.5" long, and can blow through 3/8" plywood at 75 feet.

Think of it more like this. I *WILL* get both. Which do I use as my birthday gift?

Re: Poll: Birthday Purchase

If this is the first handgun, buy this with the bday funds now. If you "need a car part" you can probably justify the Scanguage soon anyway -after all, it's for the family.

If you have a handgun, get the SGII now with the bday funds and use the ostensible fuel cost savings to offset the purchase of the 9mm later.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

SG first,

Then buy the gun with the money you save on gas.

No, you take the money you save on gas and put it towards the cost of more energy-saving items.

And while I wish it were otherwise (voted SG) you don't have anything to worry about in buying a handgun for two reasons: firstly the Supreme Court decision was clear in the DC case that you have the right to own a handgun; secondly Obama is a pragmatic centrist and has much bigger fish to fry.
