Hello everyone, newbie here
I read an article earlier this week on MSN and found out about hypermiling, and since gas has gotten ridiculous, I thought I would give it a try. I took a few of the suggestions, Pumping the tires to 42 (I just don't have the guts to go all the way to 44, which is what the max allowable is on my tires.) and not jackrabbit starting and accellerating , and no a/c. I have an '06 Tundra with a raised roof topper, manual trans. I filled it up the day before I read the article and as always, I reset the trip counter. And as usual, I did the math and found that I was getting 16 mpg (ALOT of heavy city traffic here in pinellas county fla) Anyways, I just filled it up tonight, and I already have a 25% increase in mileage! I am now at 20 mpg. Shoot, this is cool. The cab is hot, what with not using the a/c and having the windows rolled up. Oh, That reminds me, does anyone know if just using the blower fan for non a/c'd air affects the engine much? Anyways, I am thinking that now I moght get rid of the topper, the thing's gotta weigh about 400 pounds. Thanks.

Welcome to the site John. Using the fan is fine and won't hurt your FE too much at all.

Re: Hello everyone, newbie here
When you refer to topper are you talking about something like this?
If so ditching it will definitely save on weight but you might be losing aerodynamic gains... Not sure which would be better. At any rate, grats on such a huge increase in you FE!

Yes, just like that, but on a long bed platform. I thought the same thing. I needed it for a job I had and noticed that the mileage went down, which confused me as well.
And thank you.

Re: Hello everyone, newbie here
Well, if its raised up like that then I can see it lowering economy since you want the flow to be as smooth as can be. Thinking further on it I think you'll probably notice a gain by taking it off... because is it not only in the airflow over the roof, but its forming a rather large low pressure zone behind your car. Plus the weight can't help
Let us know how much it goes up when/if you do decide to take it off.

John,
Welcome to the group. There is lots of good information and advice to be had here. I am new too, and have learned a lot.
A Scangauge might help you answer your topper question. Drive with it, measure the mpg, drive without it, measure the mpg and see what you find.
Folks here love experiements and data, and you will find both invaluable.

Will do, at the moment, I am getting a new baseline test on turning off the truck at long stop lights. Some of the lights around here are timed so they are completely unavoidable. I still have a hard time getting over the old adage that it takes more gas to start then left running for a minute. According to the article ten seconds and it is a wash. Then I will have a better test to see how it goes with the topper off. If it does much better with the topper off, then ebay auto parts for sale here I come. (don't think Ill mention the low mileage, it might not be a good selling point )
