ScanGauge Calibration: with or without FAS?

Hi all,

Just got my new ScanGauge II (Thanks, Wayne!) and plugged it into my FIT a couple of days ago. I got a 40.9 mpg uncalibrated on the ride into work today. That is about 136% of EPA! It is just about time for a fill up so this new tank will be my first calibration.

QUESTION: Should I modify my driving style to get a more accurate calibration? Or will I get the most accurate calibration by using my typical driving style?

Specifically I am wondering if I should continue to FAS or not? My car does not show 9999 MPG with a FAS NICE-off glide. For some reason it will show 500-2000 MPG depending on speed and sometimes shows -3500?!?! Yes, negative.

So on one hand I am concerned that this might throw off my calibration, but on the other hand if I am driving that way typically, maybe it needs to be baked it in to the cal?

I can't answer your question , Chris, but I need to learn more about how my SGII and Civic 5AT work. I'm just beginning to do some FASing after years of just DWL. I will be waiting and watching to learn from people who have been FASing extensively.

The calibration is not affected by FAS in my experience. Use the Hybrid mode, and I turn the car back on (just not into the Start position) after a second or two, so that the SGII doesn't get shut off. My Scion xA (like most Toyotas?) has an error in the programming in that it registers 0.02 gal/hour when the engine is off, so during a FAS coast, it says ~1800MPG rather than 9999MPG as it should.

Neil: Thank you for the advice. My car reads 0.02 gal/hour when the engine is off also. I guess if my total FASing time is on the order of a 5 hours per tank it will have only a 1% offset on my 10 gal tank. That is a lot of FASing for this newbie. Maybe not for Wayne or Andrew?!

Edwin: I have only been FASing for about 3 weeks now so I wouldn't say I qualify but here is some advice from a newbie. You say that you have been DWL for years, have you been popping it into N on downgrades and such? If yes, then FAS is really the same you are just keying-off and then back on when you need power again.

I started just FASing when I come up on a fresh red light. That way I could extend my ICE-off time another 5-10 seconds while rolling to a stop. Now I am doing longer FAS runs but only on roads I am very familiar with and have previously done NICE-on glides many times, so I know when I should key-off & on and how much braking I need and when.

I will say though that these Hondas are made for FASing as far as I can tell. They are "flat towable" so they are save to glide in N. My '11 FIT has electric steering assist so I make sure to key off on a straight and get right back to II position to get steering back to normal. Check if you '08 has electric or hydraulic assist. If it is the latter you will lose the assist with ICE-off but you likely don't need it at speed.

My brakes are only good for about 3-4 pumps and after that the pedal gets REALLY stiff. If it is a longer FAS and I need to trim off a little speed, I use the hand-brake + touch the brake pedal to make sure the brake lights come on if someone is following me.

I have about a 3/4 mile stretch on the way to work where the down grade is just right to maintain the PSL of 30 mph. My commute is only 15 miles, so this FAS is a sizable portion of the drive. Pop it in N, key-off, glide and just want the trip MPG spin up, up, up! Ahh, nirvana.
