Re: Week of July 2 - July 8, 2012 (Nat Avg: $3.33)

Yeah and I was in bad shape too. I can't stand hot well. And I shouldn't let myself get rusty... But it's mostly the heat that kills my mood. If my hypothese is right (my experiences says the same but no two trips are the same...), my FE gets worse when I'm not feeling fine and dandy, ready for fun. Despite my lowered average speed.
The main road leg didn't help either.
It had trolling traffic lights too. We nicely rode on a slight slope if I remember correctly, the light was red, far far above us. I thought it might become green but for some reason, I did FAS in neutral, it's very rare I do such things but it didn't seem such a bad idea that time.
The light turned green, well such things happen, we started the engine and accelerated, we weren't that far anyway... But it turned red again, unsurprisingly quickly.
We rode in the MAIN road, one of the biggest ones in Hungary... Such a stupid thing.

I actually don't know how bad my tank will be, I should check the fuel gauge more often. I will know when it start to show my tank is 'empty' (it's around 80 kms before it really gets empty and it shows 'full' for the first 200 kms But it's pretty reliable and linear in between). It happens over 400 kms if I don't have an awful tank, above 420 it's cool, it was ~ 437 when I had my mixed record tank. Because it's close to the refueling, it gives a good idea about my tank, especially if the circumstances don't change much after I reached that point (sudden thunderstorm with heavy head/crosswind, that has a chance to do nasty things even in that case).

Oh and we had a steep long uphill/downhill leg as well. I wonder how a skilled hypermiler handles such situation Uphill was pretty simple, I rode slowly, enjoying the view (well it's nicer from the opposite direction but it was still fine). But downhill was bad. Too steep to gliding, even in gear. I got high speed in no time and the road was curvy and I was hot and dizzy, I definitely didn't want to turn fast. I thought killing the brake pads is amoral (I would have had to use them pretty much all the time, for miles!) so I used engine braking. A lot. And front braking too when I reached the part with 2 U turns where the road is narrow and really, really bad. After that, there was a slight uphill then downhill (nice, with the proper turns I guess) again, with a stop sign in the end, when I already have momentum... *sigh*
I rarely use that direction. The opposite is much, much better because downhill might be still a bit too steep but the turns aren't that sharp, the road is better and we even see better because there isn't a forest there...

On my bike to allotment this morning, haven't used my car since Monday - car pooling.
Went to my sister's in the '10 Jazz (Fit) this afternoon, 5UP, 66°F.
50.0 / 11.2 total trip.
My turn to drive to work next week.

Re: Week of July 2 - July 8, 2012 (Nat Avg: $3.33)

Finally back home (late last night). Driving a bit today to take the kids to McDonnald's (for the play place), then to Sam's Club across the street (0.2mi -- too short for the ECD to show any numbers, I guess?), then home. We'll probably head back in the same general direction this evening for dinner.

I didn't get a chance to pre-cool the car as I left it unplugged while away and didn't bother getting the charger out before driving today.

86F down, 7mph tailwind from the NW, sunny,
85F back, 11mph headwind from the WNW, sunny:
  • 5.6mpk over 8.0mi --> 187.9 MPGe (Home to McDonnald's with AC and a bit of highway)
  • 5.5mpk over 8.7mi --> 184.6 MPGe (McDonnald's to Sam's Club to home with a different route... no highway but AC the whole way)
Day Total: 5.5mpk over 16.7mi --> 184.6 MPGe

I forgot to mention that the trip back had 240lbs of salt in the back in addition to some new clothing and food amounting to probably another 40lbs.

Re: Week of July 2 - July 8, 2012 (Nat Avg: $3.33)

All in one big loop with wife riding shotgun on Saturday (needless to say the AC was on, speeds were moderate ie high): to work to get coffee for a customer who couldn't find the time to order during the week, pick up kids from my parents, deliver coffee, drop kid 1 at friend's house, buy swimming suit at Target to replace kid 2's suit left at my parents, drop kid 2 at swimming party, pick up mother in law, take mother in law shopping, drop off mother in law (Sean's mother in law return world record is safe), return home.

52.6 -- 95.2 miles (84f, round trip, wife amazed all that driving consumed less than 2 gallons, son amazed I had the AC on high enough that he could feel it in the back seat, told him not to get used to it )

Sunday -- no driving, only left the house to go on my Sunday AM long run

Nice work, AATG!

I didn't have any more driving last night because we ate at home.

Absolutely. After rain and temperature, my mood is the biggest variable in my mileage. Grumpy / tired / not concentrating = bad mpg.

It seems quite logical, one needs to focus to get good but it's true even in very familiar low speed joyride trips without traffic and any traffic lights. And I mentioned I ride slower and it matters a lot for my lil bike. So it's a bit surprising but hey, being well is a factor in baking good bread, at least it's another hypothese of mine.

It would be cool to see trip FE too. It's so hard to figure out what affects FE if everything changes between trips, let alone between whole tanks
