Re: 2012 Cruze changes...for the better
Last week my neighbor said her 1 month old Cruze , AT sent her a diagnostic report that shows a average mpg of 29. So I certainly guess YMMV.
What made this so onerous in my mind is that she has a long easy highway (about 60 miles each way) commute at non congested hours. In both directions she is moving opposite the primary traffic flow. Without some improvement at $4 a gallon I don't think it will be long before a Prius would have been a better TCO buy.
On a positive note there is plenty of room for improvement.

29mpg at 60mph would be disappointing. But if she's getting 29mpg at, say, 75mph then I wouldn't blame the car. There are folks who can flog a Prius down below 40mpg, after all.

I think she is likely in the 60-65 mph range as a good share of the commute is in a double fine zone. And that wouldn't be nice around here. She may have some non hypermiling habits but it seems that the car is falling well short of expected. As she bought it with mpg being the most important thing next to cost I think she is giving it some effort. Her old commute to work was 3 blocks and she just bought this house so getting a frugal car was important.
On the other side of the street a good freind and neighbor who I know has a propensity to go fast bought a new really nice new Prius back in January when they were still out of demand. I gave him the cleanmpg links to getting good mileage out of the Prius. He followed the instructions and got something like 55-60 mpg on his first long highway trips. He makes the drive frequently and said he couldn't stand going that slow and is now back to "leader of the pack" status and very happy with the 45 mpg the Prius gets him at 70-75+ mph. Overall he really likes it over the Tahoe and Lexus. At least he isn't that guy getting 40.
Hope the Cruze sends her better news as it gets a few miles on it.
