2010 Civic Si
Hey Honda owners, I am new to CleanMPG and just wanted to poke my head in and say hello. Name's Steve and I'm 24 years old.
I started out with my Civic Si, because of 3 things that mattered to me. I wanted performance, 6-speed, and style.
I have been attempting hypermiling for about a week and I am starting to get the hang of it. I stated off around 23mpg and have slowly worked my way up to 33mpg and still climbing. I'm currently experimenting with different routes and fine tuning the techniques I am using. I did pick up a ScanGauge II and its quite the interesting device.
I am not out to save the planet by any means, not saying I don't care, but the reason I went with the Si is to have some fun every now and again.

Now that I think about it that was another reason I got it. Wanted to be a little more unique. I would agree, I don't see that many Si's in Indiana.

Re: 2010 Civic Si
I just traded my 07 SI for a Civic Hybrid. I was able to get up to about 33 mpg too. I know it takes some work to get to get 33 out of it.

My goal is to get 40mpg out of it maybe 45, but its a car that is designed to be used under a heavy throttle, so to me its also more of a challenge =)
I still love the car tho.

Re: 2010 Civic Si
It's fine to use the throttle judiciously. The real gains are at the other end: look far ahead and anticipate any slowdowns or stops. Let off the gas early and coast down to the stop.

Re: 2010 Civic Si
NxCmp,
Welcome to the board! It is always great to have another Honda guy around here! I contemplated the Si 4-door but my family and business pushed me toward the FIT. I'm not 24 anymore, can you tell!
A couple of suggestions:
- Put your car type in your profile so it appears in the header of your posts. That way people can provide feedback that is specific to your car.
- Put your mileage log tag in your footer: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5095
- Read, read, read this site. I found diving into the long history of the Fuel Economy forum particularly helpful.
- It is not too late to join the Summer FE Challenge: http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44251
I gotta believe that you can get that MT Si to 150%-175% EPA or better if you put your mind to it. Like any mental/physical skill it takes time and you will improve with each tank. You are already off to an awesome start! Good luck.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: 2010 Civic Si
Thank you all for the warm welcome and the tips. I an currently trying DWL, slowing down, cutting the engine when at a stop light for more then 30 second, breaking slowly to avoid a full stop, taking quicker turns, and not idling. Although I have to have A/C because of my skin conditions and in this 100+ degree heat in Indians I have to have it. I am still trying to find better routes and what throttle position is best for some of the hills I'm facing.
Like I said if I can hit 45mpg I'll be happy.

Careful there, this is an addictive pursuit and will soon find you unhappy with numbers you initially thought unattainable.

Thanks for the heads up, but to elaborate a little more I'll be happy with 45mpg based on the amount of effort required, I would also like to enjoy the ride and not to focus on best mpg the entire time. I would rather keep the effort to a level I am comfortable with and still enjoy it while getting better mpg at the same time. If you understand where I'm coming from.
- Steve
