will my ultragauge work with the optima, having the engine cut-out on throttle lift? is that something that is programmable?

In the menu on the UG, go to Ultragage Setup and then Injector Cutoff.
Change the value to 17.

When the car goes to fuel cut, the instant mpg will display 999.9 and the little oval in the top right ("loop") will be open at the top to show "open loop". If you are showing spark advance as one of your gages, it should display somewhere in the -11 to -15 range BTDC.

Also, if you choose to display throttle position, use "Relative" and not "Absolute" - it will be easier to track TPS that way.

In my Elantra (same basic engine controller), I display instant and average MPG, battery voltage (to keep an eye on it during prolonged engine-off at long lights), relative throttle position (keep it under 9% to beat the EPA), ignition advance (above 25 is the target), and engine load (when it goes over 90%, the car will likely downshift).

There are also setups for engine size, fuel tank size, and distance calibration. See page 30 of the pdf manual. If you don't have the manual pdf, send me a PM with your personal email and I will send it to you. It's only about a megabyte so it should get through most email systems without a problem.

Thanks maxx! I wondered what that value was for.

Doing much better this tankful, even after a horrible 10mile stop/go from a fender bender Im still at apprx 36.5mpg on the 'avg' meter. Course I take that with a grain of salt, but I'm doing what I can. Very happy with the car thus far! Super impressed with its space too (Im 6ft 3, 245lbs), so interior space is paramount for me.

The "Injector Cutoff" gets set to the engine displacement in liters multiplied by 7 and rounded up to a whole number.
2.4 x 7 = 16.8, so 17 should be fine.

Until you know the degree of odometer error, it's not easy to know how accurate the average mpg meter is. In the related Hyundai sedans, the average mpg seems like it's way too high, but when you add in the miles you covered that didn't show on the odometer, it's not too far off. Even if that 36.5 is over by 10%, you're still at 33, and that's not a bad showing for a car with so much interior room.

Your height/weight is between Wayne and me, so I know how well you fit in the car. After 7900 miles in the Optima, neither of us felt claustrophobic and had no soreness/stiffness from all those hours in the car. It's a fantastic roadtrip machine, and the comfort of the seat and driving position is something you will enjoy even more on longer distances.

this 500+ mile range is killin me for seein what I get for a tank avg mpg lol.

31.27mpg that tankful. 521.6miles, 16.68 gallons, avg speed 30mph. mostly traffic/city driving. Not bad, think I can do better. had some reallll bad traffic that hurt my mpg a lot at one point.

Finally got around and installed my ultragauge in the car. Curious as to how accurate everything is.

My last tank said 34.5mpg avg, hand calc came out to 30.6 mpg . However I have not verified accuracy of the odo/mph gauge yet. I need to, I understand its roughly on avg 2% lower than actual miles traveled. I also took a lot more effort topping that tank off than the last one.

I'll be making adjustments etc. this tankful.

congrats on your purchase! what other cars did you consider/test drive? do you have the turbo version?

i was under the impression that you could get one with a 6-speed manual, just not with the turbo

thanks! ford focus, kia forte (didnt like it), kia soul (too ugly), hyundai elantra, hyundai sonata, chevy cruze, chevy sonic.

Non-turbo. I wanted the best deal for the $ honestly, was trying to reduce my expenses etc. I could have gotten the hybrid for better mpg, but didnt really have the extra 4k or so to pick it up (got mine out the door for $20,250 tax/title/tag etc). I also really liked how spacious the optima was over all the other cars besides the sonata.

The hyundai dealership had a 1500$ markup on each vehicle over msrp, and they wouldnt budge... which is why I dont have one of those lol.

I couldnt find a 6spd.. at all. Kinda a bummer, but oh well! The car is awesome.. got 35.8mpg last tankful!
