8-speed: Paddle-shifting spurs '13 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The base model carries an EPA estimated 21/30 fuel mileage.

Bud Wells - DENVERPOST - June 12, 2012

Paddle-shifting of the new 8-speed automatic transmission, an advancement for the 2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Coupe, came into frequent play as we descended Boulder Canyon from Nederland on Colo. 119 Sunday afternoon.
Using 3rd and 4th gears kept the engine revved to a satisfactory state of alertness and allowed the Genesis to maintain its pace on the corners and in the busy line of traffic ahead. Little braking was necessary, as the lower gear-set kept the coupe at bay among the other movers.

The major changes for the '13 Genesis coupe, in addition to front-end restyling, are direct-injection for the 3.8-liter V-6, boosting horsepower to 348, and the 8-speed automatic transmission with manual-mode shift and paddles, replacing a 6-speed automatic.

We had driven to the Black Forest Restaurant in Nederland to join Kurt and Tammy Wells, Dale and Sandy Wells, Brent and Tina Wells, Bill and Kathy Allen and Ruth Davis for a birthday dinner.

Kim Parker accompanied Jan and me, and tested the elevated rear seat, which was more pleasant than many two doors for the better vision it provided in the back. Kim, though, is 5-foot-4; the high-riding seat doesn't leave adequate headroom for those taller than that.

The new coupe went on sale two months ago... [Read More]

that thang has a bigger engine than most SUV's. I'm sure it is fun though!

I didn't see the article mention the HP of the turbo 4. But they beat the V6's EPA rating on the review (26.2 MPG is really impressive at the end of a performance car review).

Of course any journalist who lists "rear wheel drive" as a minus, I'd have to wonder about.

My fingers are sore just thinking about clicking through 8 gears. After a full day sitting in front of a keyboard, I honestly think a 6 speed stick would hurt less.

Re: 8-speed: Paddle-shifting spurs '13 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

I had a chance earlier today to take a short drive in the Genesis coupe 2.0t 6MT. It's the 274hp GDI turbo from the Sonata. The shifter is a bit higher than the one in the Sonata and getting to reverse is a little weird (over, back a little, fiddle with it, and then toward the dash for R), but it felt pretty good and fine for a performance car.

The 8AT is a Hyundai design and it's so smooth you only know its shifting when you look at the tach. While the coupe is no lightweight, it feels far more agile than you might expect.

You have to wonder what they will do for the gearshift display (PRND and then 1-8) when they go to a 10+ speed automatic. They can't use hexadecimal because "D" is already drive and so they can use that letter for 13th gear.

I'm guessing it will be about 1320 feet , give or take a few centimeters.
