2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
The one thing the 12 Veloster lacked was oommppphhhh. That changes right now!
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - June 10, 2012
2013 Hyundai Veloster with the 1.6L GDI-T in Matte Gray – The 201 HP fire breather starts at $21,950 yet still provides a decent 38 mpgUS highway rating.
Yeah, I am still catching up
Last week Hyundai released the pricing details for its 2013 Veloster and the 2013 Veloster Turbo equipped with an all-new 201 HP 1.6L direct-injected twin-scroll turbocharged engine. The Turbo will be available for $21,950 including its high-output turbo powertrain, unique body kit, front heated leather sport seats, tuned exhaust, sport-tuned steering, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlight accents and taillights, and a variety of turbo model interior design elements.
Hyundai’s 1.6L DI and turbocharged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger providing little lag and near-instantaneous power delivery according to the release. Twin-scroll turbochargers have traditionally been used on more expensive high performance engines, but Hyundai has brought this technology down to a much more affordable level.
Design Upgrades
A bolder hexagonal front grille, deeply sculpted side skirts and new rear bumper with prominent diffuser vents in the lower fascia, differentiate the Veloster Turbo from its already aggressive looking base model sibling. In addition, a set of 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts completes the Veloster Turbo’s appearance. From the front, Veloster Turbo also reveals headlight LED accents. Hyundai designers have replaced the Veloster’s trapezoidal center exhaust with two large round exhaust tips. This free-flowing exhaust design.
Inside, leather seats with Turbo-embroidered stitching in the seatbacks deliver a sporty appearance and provide both exceptional support and comfort. A turbo-exclusive electroluminescent gauge cluster offers the driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format, with two TFT screens located between the tachometer and the speedometer. Even more, heated front sport seats are also standard on the Turbo version. Veloster Turbo also incorporates race-inspired push-button start and alloy pedals as standard equipment.
2013 Veloster Turbo Features - New 1.6L turbocharged, direct-injected engine
- 201 HP at 6,000 RPM
- Best-in-class highway fuel economy estimated at 38 mpg (M/T)
- Sport-tuned intake and exhaust note
- Sport-tuned steering
- Unique front fascia, fog lights and ground effects
- Hyundai-first Matte Gray paint and Elite White Pearl for Turbo models
- Unique 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts
- Projection headlights with unique LED headlight accents
- Side mirrors with turn signal indicators
- Unique LED taillights
- Electroluminescent gauge cluster
- Leather seating surfaces with driver’s lumbar support
- Heated front sport seats
- Turbo-exclusive standard Graphite Black interior w/Blue Accents
- Turbo headliner graphics
2013 Veloster Pricing
| Model | Transmission | MSRP | | Veloster (1.6L GDI Engine) | 6-Speed MT | $17,450 | | Veloster (1.6L GDI Engine) | 6-Speed Dual Clutch AT | $18,700 | | Veloster Turbo (1.6L GDI-T Engine) | 6-Speed MT | $21,950 | | Veloster Turbo (1.6L GDI-T Engine) | 6-Speed AT | $22,950 |
2013 Veloster D&H = $775
It’s hot looking, should be hot performing and most importantly follows the Hyundai signature pricing model. Meaning it’s actually affordable. Who would have thought

Re: 2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
The automatic in the Veloster Turbo is a conventional hydraulic torque converter/planetary automatic - the same one that will be fitted in the 2013 SantaFe Sport. It appears Hyundai is not taking any chances with spirited drivers and they are installing a beefy transmission.
What will really set the turbo apart is the mountain of torque available above 1500rpm. The EPA estimates will be very good for a sporty car that offers over 200hp.

Re: 2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
I'm having a hard time seeing how turbocharging improves fuel economy here.
The EPA test cycle should require the same power N.A. Vs turbocharged -- yet a drop in fuel economy = turbocharging worsens fuel economy.

I just wish they had made all of the above optional and priced the car at $19,999
That said, this car makes the 500 Abarth look VERY bad.

Right. It's really true that "turbocharging improves fuel economy" only if you compare to a hypothetical equally powerful normally aspirated engine, which is what that sort of statement typically assumes.

Re: 2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
Same displacement + turbo = more power, therefore the capacity to burn more fuel. Of course, a 200hp V6 would be quite a bit thirstier!
The only thing that worries me about the Veloster is the hatch opening. Maybe I'm being too practical, but it looks like I would never be able to fit anything useful (taller than a box of paper or similar) through what looks like a tiny door.

Re: 2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
The Veloster hatch opening extends forward to just aft of the sharkfin. It has a two piece rear window, like the Prius II. The cargo area, while not huge, will blow away any small coupe (Scionbaru, Civic coupe, etc) trunk volumes while doing a respectable job of swallowing a college dorm's modular furniture and bric-a-brac when heading home to ma-n-pa during break.
About the turbo giving better mileage:
2013 Hyundai Veloster turbo - 1.6L engine, 201hp, EPA 27/38 with 6MT
2006 GM midsize Malibu/G6/Aura - 3.5L V6, 201hp, EPA 20/28 with 4AT
The old GM "high value" V6 was rated at the same exact 201hp, and offered about 3/4 of the FE of the new turbo 1.6. When the pedal is buried and the turbo is running on full boil, it will drink as fast as a V6 of twice the displacement, but the idea is to keep the tall pedal a reasonable distance above the carpet, and then you can have small car economy with sporty car performance.

Re: 2013 Turbo Equipped Hyundai Veloster Pricing Announced
I'd like to see SS numbers for the Veloster. There's some disappointed owners reporting the (NA) mpg falls apart above 60 mph. If this is true I'd expect that trait to be worse on the turbo.
/IMO-- 6mt vs 4at throws more fruit into an apples to oranges comparison

Beware that those Hyundai with 2.0L turbo engines (Sonata and Genesis) fail to perform as the power rating suggests in many tests, leaving many to joke if the real power of Hyundai's turbo engine is just 80% of what's advertised.
