Re: Broke that 40 mpg mark
I have recently broke the 40 mpg mark in my 1999 civic ex 2 dr coupe
before it was always 30-33
then i needed
new tires, front end aligned and replaced some front end parts,
changed to synthetic oil..
started driving under 60mph using the cruse control and holding rpms below 2500....and 40mpg was consistent every tank. hooraw

Re: Broke that 40 mpg mark
Well, I just finished my next tank. 451.8 miles from 10.339 gallons is 43.7 mpg.
I'm getting better at this! (And avoiding that big hill on the way to work).
Thanks for the encouragement, everyone.

Any hints for driving in hilly terrain?
Or hints for working around this car's low gearing?

Oops, I see no replies to the questions:
Hilly terrain:
If you're not using pulse and glide in hilly terrain you want to be using Driving With Load. It's anti-cruise: you keep a steady (efficient) load on the engine and allow your speed to vary. As long as your speed remains high enough on a climb that you don't need to downshift or apply more gas to remain in high gear you can then let gravity help you regain speed on the other side of the hill. If you either need to shift or use more gas pick whichever poison tastes nicer.
Low gearing:
I believe that in his '96 Andrew simply avoids high speed and steep hills.
Congratulations on the additional improvement!

Wow, nice job! What is your ride? I suggest putting it in your profile header so people know.

You were absolutely right. I didn't see it then, but I just tanked up for my first 50+ mpg tank!
I'm not even totally sure what makes the difference, but warming up to summer temperatures has sure helped!
