Europeans pay a LOT more for cars- it is hard to actually tell what is what in manufacturing costs-car companies probably have cars where they accept lower profits-.
The prices you see in UK/Europe are generally "out-the-door" and they include Value Add Tax ≈20% (VAT) and engine displacement tax ≈10% that do not apply to exports.

So to get close to "real" price you must multiply "out-the-door" price by ≈0.77 before doing currency exchange rate conversions.

That makes a BIG difference ... doesn't it?

Maybe some of our Euro friends will be kind enough to confirm or correct my analysis of the taxes buried in the EU "out-the-door" pricing ...

OTR = On The Road is the usual term. As with other consumer goods the price is quoted including tax which is now 20% (part of the austerity measures = what they wanted to do anyway). Also registration.

AutoCar used the term "out the door" in their discussion of vehicle prices.

The 20% is UK VAT. UK automotive VAT was 18% in 2009/2010 and 20% 2Q2011. iirc.

There was an ≈8% engine displacement tax for engines below 2 Liters but reduces to 0% at somewhere around 1 Liter. Further, this tax rate increases with displacements above 2 Liters.

The UK taxing authority told me that was typical across the EU.

There are also tax bands requiring periodic periodic payment based on the CO2 emissions rating of the vehicle, higher CO2 higher tax. But I do not know if this is included in the pricintg statement.

Re: Turbocharging Is the Real Deal

So the MSRP European prices we usually read are
the equivalent off our sales price+TTL- usually about 9-11% in the USA.

OK so what is the current EUROPEAN price of a Prius C-apparently the Yaris Hybrid is the same car with different sheetmetal.
$20,000 in the USA goes to dealer-dealer pays Toyota-whatever

Multiply Euro Total price by .83 and we should find out what the dealer in Europe gets.
If Europeans pay $24000 total- it is the same as we-USA -pay?
Or we could use a mid range "normal Prius" figure $25000 vs $30,000?
What is the number for a midrange Prius in Europe??

According to Toyota UK's website the Yaris Hybrid cash price is #15,895.00 (that'll be OTR).

At #1 => $1.55 (current mid-market rate) that's $20,531 ex VAT.

Prices seem about the same as the Prius c here. If only they built US versions in the USA.

Re: Turbocharging Is the Real Deal

ItsNot About-THANKs for the info- so the MSRP before taxes etc- all but the same.

Anyone pay more than 9% sales tax in the USA.
In NOLA it is 9% about 5% state rest parish I guess.
Next door in Jefferson Parish I pay 8.75-
You pay the tax based on where you live.

I'm still a bit unclear-do the Europeans require the same sort of particle filter setup? The one that uses fuel to "clean" the filter-hurts mpg?

I'm just wondering why our VW TDI gets such poor mpg- heck older version did at least as well??
Fords newest TD pickup does better -much better- than older versions-despite particle filter??
Why is "our" VW so poor??
