A “Driving with Load” like Cruise Control for the Big Rigs Is Ready to Roll

Predictive Cruise Control – A Smart cruise that saves fuel.

A Daimler product, an older Freightliner Cascadia climbing the Rockies. If it only had Predictive Cruise Control its owner/operators could have saved thousands of $ per year by reducing their consumption by thousands of gallons of diesel.

Taking the driver out of the equation may be one of the only real things that can be done get the big rigs to reduce their fuel consumption. Now Mercedes-Benz may have a partial solution.

A cruise control (CC) that can "see ahead" is about to go live. Predictive Power Control, now available in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros, reduces fuel consumption by an additional three percent. Because the system is familiar with the topography of the road ahead, it is able to respond in a way that will deliver the most fuel-efficient performance. This new driver assistance system really comes into its own when negotiating up- or downhill gradients. As the first GPS-based cruise control system, Predictive Powertrain Control not only intervenes to control speed and braking, but can now also regulate the transmission. The system thus extends use of the fuel-saving “EcoRoll” or “Glide” function, which is a standard feature on the Actros, and will provide a carefully judged single or double downshift where and when appropriate.

A first stage of development occurred three years ago when Daimler Trucks introduce a GPS speed regulator, without gearshift intervention as an option for its Freightliner trucks in the USA. When it was launched onto the market in 2009 this system, it was the first cruise control system to look ahead. Combining geodetic data with the ability to pinpoint the vehicle's position through the Global Positioning System (GPS) makes "predictive" driving in cruise control mode possible.

The new development from Mercedes-Benz builds on this basis, using its knowledge of the road ahead when driving up or downhill. In doing so, Predictive Powertrain Control turns the classic and inherent disadvantage of a non-regulated cruise control system into clearly measurable advantages: fully laden long-distance haulage trucks such as the new Actros 1845 BlueTec 6 can achieve fuel savings of around three percent in long-distance operations over moderately difficult topography compared with "non-regulated" examples fitted with a classic cruise control system.

Predictive Powertrain Control is representative of a new type of technology that brings together the technology that is already in the vehicle with external data from its surroundings. As a result, the intelligent CC system with transmission intervention delivers a driving performance that could only be matched by an extremely motivated truck driver with an exceptional level of concentration. To put it another way: Predictive Powertrain Control exploits the fuel-saving potential of the new Actros better than the average Joe.

Operating a vehicle with Predictive Powertrain Control is just as easy as you would expect with any Mercedes-Benz truck. In essence, all the driver has to do is to operate the speed regulator. Over and above the parameters that could previously already be set, just one further critical value needs to be defined. Alternatively, the driver can simply rely on the parameters as pre-set at the start of each journey. Over the course of the trip, the most important variables can then be very easily fine-tuned via the menu of the on-board computer.

This presumes the presence of an automatic transmission, correct? Have big rigs been switching over to ATs and I haven't heard about it, or is this a new development? And what's the mileage penalty of switching a huge truck over to slushbox technology?

Hi Dan:

Some new ones have. These things are in top gear and TC locked up most of the time so there is not the same hit as we get with the POS ATs in our cars.

I've been on the road in Arizona and southern CA the past 2 days and the truckers I've seen could certainly benefit greatly from such a system. I try to find a trucker going my speed to follow because I'm driving for gas mileage and slowing down a lot for upgrades. No good, though. They all drive so erratically it's not worth the bother.

Re: A “Driving with Load” like Cruise Control for the Big Rigs Is Ready to Roll

The "automatics" in trucks are properly called autoshift transmissions. They are manual boxes that have been converted/designed so the truck itself does the shifting. The early Roadranger "auto's" still had a clutch pedal that was used to stop and start but the pedal was never used when the truck was moving. Most of the new ones are two pedal auto's (no clutch pedal) but there is still a clutch which is controlled by the computers. My current truck has the Volvo I-Shift transmission which is only available with a Volvo engine. The tranny and it's software are so advanced the tranny controls how the engine operates rather than the engine telling the tranny. As for the advanced cruise control Scania has developed a system as well.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1nqKakM74w&feature=plcp
