Philosophical question for you.

If there was a chip you could put in your car that would yield 190 mpg but would cause black smoke to pour out of your tailpipe would you do it?

I would.

Hi EXPIOWA:

Nope. I would buy a BEV instead.

Counter question: Is it possible for a car to be so efficient to get 190 mpg AND have so much unburnt fuel as to emit black smoke?

Sorry to spoil your bait.

Re: Philosophical question for you.

It would be awesome for tailgaters!

The Abrams tank dumps jet fuel (kerosene) on the exhaust to generate a white cloud of smoke on purpose... modern TDI engines do the same, the white smoke cancels out the black smoke

actually I dont mind tailgaters, they are a rolling rear impact buffer.. STOP HATIN

Re: Philosophical question for you.

I think the rhetorical question is written to convey the advertising promise with actual results from customers who bought one and used it.

@Wayne - You have the right idea. Imagine the advertising tagline:
GET UP TO 106mpg CITY, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DRIVE! SEND $99.95 TODAY!
And when people send in their hundred bucks, send them an index card that says "Take whatever you're driving and trade it in on a Leaf."

Re: Philosophical question for you.

No. I would wait for the version with slightly worse mileage but a BSF*.

* Black smoke filter.

Re: Philosophical question for you.

I'd add a particulate filter and give up a few mpg

No. I try to be a responsible citizen, and I would not want to contribute that much to the respiratory problems of asthmatic children and the elderly.

Ha, funny "smoking out tailgaters" should come up today. I did something to a tailgater that I've never done before, and may never do again, but I felt like doing something different. This guy was riding me pretty close and getting on my nerves as I rolled along at the 35mph limit. He'd had plenty of chances ot pass but decided to glue himself to me anyway. This time I didn't feel like giving the usual warning flash of the brakes or blinkers.

Sooo.... A firm YANK of the e-brake lever for 2-3 seconds. Slowed me down less than 5mph because the rear tires don't have that much grip, so no real chance of a collision. But let out a nice screech and a BIIIIG cloud of smoke washing over his hood and windshield. Made him back right the eff off.
Again, not gonna make it a habit since I don't want to flat-spot my tires (or my butt), but that felt real good.

Lol, you lost a few miles of tire life there.. how about skirting a couple oz of diesel fuel into the muffler to generate a white cloud of smoke?.. not sure if the muffler gets hot enough.. perhaps inject it right after the catalytic converter and wrap the metallic line a few times around the pipe to pre-heat the diesel to the boiling point (400°F). Just make sure its not an unmarked police car tailgaiting you.

Remote Control airplane people do that to generate a smoke trail for shows.. but they use something called "Concrete Form Release Oil", very thick white smoke.
