Traded in my 06 HCHII for a Mazda 3 w/ Skyactiv
I said goodbye to my 2006 HCHII a couple days ago, trading it in on a 2012 Mazda 3 iTouring with Skyactiv engine. It's a nice compromise.. I can zip around and drive fast if I want to, or I can apply the Hypermiling tactics I learned driving the HCHII and get it to average over 40mpg (but not 50, yet.)
I'm going to miss the Hybrid, but it was time for a change..

Hi Dlister70:
Congrats on the new ride! If it’s a 6-speed stick and you really push it, you will pull HCH “like” numbers. The AT however pulls back its capabilities somewhat.

Had my first ride in a Prius last weekend - brand new 2012 model. Is it me, or is that dashboard just too high? I have almost gotten used to cars where the hood curves down so much you can't see the front corners, but on the Prius I couldn't see the hood at all. My sight line intersected the street about 10 feet in front of the car - must be fun parking that thing. At least it had a backup camera because the view out the back stinks too. I also hated both the dashboard and console electronic displays, which were much too busy for my taste. The car drove nicely though.
My other car is a Mazda but too old for Skyactiv. As I recall they charge a couple of $K more for those models, just like the hybrids cost more. At least for Skyactiv you never have to worry about battery packs getting old. That is, it shouldn't cost more in maintenance costs, just the initial premium.

Why do folks worry so much about EV packs. They are not that expensive! Trans. cost way more. ICE way more. Super chargers cost more and suspension problems cost lots as well. The only car that is having electric pack problems are Honda Hybrids. And really I am not sure the percentage of pack problems with Honda is that bad. So why worry about packs. They give more benefits than problems they create! H

My guess would be that you *know* an EV pack will eventually degrade to the point of uselessness. Whether it takes two years, ten years, twenty years... it's a chemical system that will fail no matter how good care you take of it. You can't say that about an engine or a trans... I traded in a 20-year old Civic DX last summer, 100% original apart from a rusted out door panel! Now show me a battery that can last that long and isn't made of something radioactive.

But that's equally true of several components on conventional cars, if you're talking really long term and assuming reasonable mileage per year. Some of those components are missing from hybrids, or replaced by more durable substitutes.
