Re: my idiot neighbors
I thought it was strange that USEPA had an incident commander involved for an incident that only involved the dumping of a couple drums of oil (usually little stuff like that is delegated to the states.) I poked around and it looks like you are next door to a "de-listed" superfund site.
It looks like they had plating operations there in the past, so there could be all kinds of wicked stuff (for instance cyanide or about any acid or metal you could think of) in the waste drums that the scrappers were handling. My first guess would be that scrapper's torch sparks ignited the fire.
It would be a good idea to stay away from any smoke and if you have a well at your shop you might want to get a copy of reports from when they investigated the site to see if they were concerned about groundwater impacts.

Re: my idiot neighbors
They did tear down the factory right across the street to the east from my shop, back in 2000. Didnt think the 501 Berrien was part of the superfund site. It needs to come down, but noone wants to spend the money to do it.
In 2008 it sold at the county tax auction, the same time I bought mine. The owners didnt pay a dime in taxes so it went back to the city / county and sold again at the auction last fall. The owners havent paid a dime in taxes..... I see a pattern here.
When the smoke started coming in my building it smelt like old oil burning. I came out of the shop, saw the smoke and called 911. As I was on the phone I went to one door and could hear what sounded like guys throwing wood on the fire. And yea, I stayed up wind of it until they had it put out.
No well at my place, no water at all in my shop. Workers cut the line when they torn down the other building (in 2000, before I bought it). They figured why bother hooking it back up, its an empty building.
Thanks for the info

Re: my idiot neighbors
Talked to a deq worker over there today, she said the superfund stuff was for ground contamination, not above ground (buildings). I may not be remembering that exactly as she was hott and I'm easily distracted by that kinda thing.
Later heard a local cop on the phone saying 'asbestos is falling like snow'.
EPA crews are back tonight cleaning asbestos.

Re: my idiot neighbors
NICE! I didn't even think of that. It's portable fencing too! Not even secured in the ground. Hahahaha
