There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
Owners purchasing pre-owned Hyundai’s with a Sirius XM radio installed now get a 3-months Sirius XM trial just like a new owner.
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - April 25, 2012
2011 Hyundai Sonata with a 26/35 mpgUS city/highway rating with the 6-speed MT. Pick up a used one and you receive a 3-month trail of Sirius XM now too.
Hyundai and Sirius XM have come to terms to provide used Hyundai customers across the US a three-month Sirius XM subscription when they purchase any pre-owned Hyundai vehicles equipped with an OEM satellite radio system. It is like receiving a new car with the free trial now available from participating Hyundai dealers.
Hyundai customers purchasing pre-owned vehicles with a satellite radio from participating Hyundai dealerships will get automatic access to commercial-free music, and premier sports, news, talk, entertainment plus traffic and weather information delivered by SiriusXM.
Hyundai will continue to offer customers a three-month SiriusXM subscription with the purchase of new and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles that are factory equipped with satellite radio.
While SiriusXM is nice, a 3-month trial will provide you with a taste to see if it meets your needs.

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
Until somebody helped themselves to my aftermarket converter I enjoyed satellite radio. I hope nobody gets my ScanGauge!
I remember losing the signal driving through the Santa Cruz mountains. Probably redwoods blocking the signal. Has anyone had these kinds of reception problems?
Probably doesn't cost Hyundai a penny to offer sirius free. Good marketing.

Only under very large underpasses. Sometimes there's a few glitches in Philly as it bounces between satellite and terrestrial transmitters.
I actually chose Sirius over XM because of their satellite orbit pattern, which favors the northern US, and usually keeps 2 sats in view in different spots on the sky. XM uses fixed geostationary sats and like any other they require a constant clear view of the southern sky. XM relies more heavily on terrestrial repeaters because of this.

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
Hi Rich:
That is an excellent graphic!
While driving the v-3 over the Cascades two weekends ago from Seattle to Yakima and back, there were a number of areas where I lost reception for a few seconds to upwards of a minute in the deeper canyons. The boxes surely buffer but not to much more than a few seconds more than likely. Similarly, I was traveling through a number of tunnels and did not lose reception so a buffering scheme is definitely in force. Anyone have a link handy?
In any case, there may not be a kickback but there is a lot of goodwill that Hyundai receives with each used Hyundai they sell with a working SirusXM trial in it.

I guess I should be clear, even though Sirius/XM merged, their satellites and equipment did not. Sirius branded devices cannot use XM satellites and repeaters and vice versa.
The Prius v uses XM satellites, and XM has a much more extensive network of terrestrial repeaters because of the satellites low orbit. If you were out of clear sky for more than 3 seconds or so, you can bet the radio had switched to a ground repeater.
I've found this graphic of all the XM repeaters around seattle area. It's low resolution but you can see there are plenty of them!

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
Try listening to XM for a 17 hour drive, their last list is very short
I would not pay $5 a month for it

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
I had my Sirius/XM radio for about nine months. I had a "best of" combination of both XM and Sirius channels. I do remember that when I chose it , I wanted to make sure I could hear Stern AND Opie and Anthony, lol. But I found MANY other channels I enjoyed, especially the Grateful Dead. The only problem for me was......... it was only a home setup, an add-on for a Sony home theater receiver. It worked very well , considering that the home theater is in the basement and the antenna was in the window, about six inches above ground level. Unfortunately , I found that when I'm home, the competition from Netflix,Huluplus and other Internet channels was way more attractive and the satellite radio didn't get used much.
Now if I had one in my CAR , it would get a lot more use.
Anyone want to buy a Sirius home setup for cheap ?

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
I had sirius in several of my cars, but when they re signed Stern for 400 million i canceled them all. I refuse to have my money pay that scumbag. Sirius would be able to charge a good 20% less without paying him that kind of money.

Re: There Goes Hyundai Thinking Outside the Box Again
I had Sirius when I had my Mazda3 and enjoyed it. But like the car itself, it was a frill and not really all that necessary. Nice on trips, but I didn't take that many trips.
