Nissan’s Mass Produced Li-Ion’s are Only a Hint of What’s To Come

The Nissan-NEC joint venture Zama plant produces approximately half the global auto industry's total Li-Ion battery production.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - April 17, 2012

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn at Zama.

Zama, a Nissan-NEC joint-venture created in 2007, builds Li-Ion cells and after mating four cells into each battery module, they are sent to Nissan's Oppama facility which assembles 48 of the mated cells into a full LEAF battery pack.

Meeting Zama employees, Ghosn stressed the importance of the battery business in expanding the EVs market, including the Nissan LEAF, which has to date been purchased by more than 27,000 individuals and fleets.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn: "Zama is not only a production facility, it is also a facility where we are trying all the improvements we can make, in order to make the battery much more efficient."

Nissan's UK Sunderland plant began manufacture of Li-Ion batteries in February and will start LEAF production next year, complementing near-term production at the Smyrna, TN plant.

Zama's soon-to-be announced battery technologies will push the envelope of battery development and we cannot wait to hear what they have in store
