Chevy Sonic - EPIC MPG FAIL???

Someone slap me. I'm a die hard Chevrolet guy and have been hoping for what seems like years for a quality compact from the General that gets good mpg. Here I've been...patiently waiting for the mpg specs on the 2012 Sonic with the 1.4L and auto transmission. Now I'm supremely disappointed.

I was a bit shocked with initial specs were released on the 1.8L engine. It got 35mpg. Okay, what is this....1999 or something? I was willing to let it slide since it was a dinosaur engine and it got good gas mileage when equiped with the 1.4L turbo and manual transmission.

fueleconomy.gov now shows that the Sonic will get 37mpg on the highway with the 1.4L and auto transmission.

Really? Come on guys! You do realize that 98.3469% of your customer base is going to get automatic transmissions! Did you forget that 40mpg is the new black?

Oh and the price. If I want a 1.4L with an automatic transmission, alloy wheels, and cruise control.....its going to run me into the $19-20k range. Oh boy.

You have failed me. How can a larger, heavier Cruze get 39mpg without an Eco package and the lightweight Sonic get 37mpg? You do realize that smaller, lighter cars are generally supposed to get better gas mileage right?

GM.....You do realize that other manufacturers are getting good gas mileage out of there compacts right? And they are alot cheaper? Heck even a very well equipped gigantosaurus Hyundai Elantra gets 40mpg and it doesn't even have direct injection! And it costs less!

Sorry for the rant. Maybe they will add an "Eco" package to the Sonic for a few thousand. Maybe then you can have an automatic Sonic that gets 40mpg for under $21k. Might as well buy a hybrid at that point.
