Question on filter for hybrid battery

I got distracted while removing the small filter in the rear compartment and did not notice the direction of the air flow arrows. Does anyone recall whether they go up toward the roof or down toward the floor? Mine is a 2005 Ford escape hybrid.

Thanks!

John
