Mazda2 Manual (Shifting Question)

I read a bunch of threads on here, but I'm still a little confused.

At what rpm should I be shifting at to get the best gas mileage without harming my engine? My car seems to run just fine in 5th gear at 30.

I read though that running in a high gear at low speed can mess up the cylinder walls.

So I'm not sure when to shift. I was shifting between 3,000 & 4,000 rpm which is just normal driving for this car.

This week I've been shifting much earlier & getting into 5th gear probably before 30 mph to try & get better mpg's. But I don't want to do that if I'm going to hurt something.

Right now I average 38 mpg's just driving normal.
