Virtually every president since the oil crisis of the early 70's has promoted similar ideas. And we are in worse shape now than then. For the most part the American people are too blinded by things like "American Idol" to care. When the sh*t finally does hit the fan (permanent recession caused by unfordable energy prices for the middle class?) , then the reaction will be the govment should have done something. The doctrine that "conservation is not an energy policy" is fully entrenched in most minds. I am told frequently that we have enough oil for hundreds of years if only the pinko environmentalists would let the oil companies drill. Most of those folk think you simply drill into shale rock and a Hollywood type gusher will ensue.
