In fact I broke a bolt in the engine while installing, and when I got around to taking care of that it cost me about $50 as I recall (to get it tapped out, removed, replaced). Just like the earlier writer said, this device preys on people's desire to get something for nothing.

I sent the "device" back to them, including a portion of my spreadsheet which showed my fuel economy before and during install.. they quietly refunded my money. I think most of these gizmos and snake oils prey on another thing: people's BELIEVING they are getting more mpg but not really knowing since they don't keep track or hadn't been keeping track BEFORE the install. Or, they might be getting more MPG by changing their driving habits along with having the new thingie, simply because they're more focused on that now.

My father's friend was marketing an engine oil and fuel additive called Ethos, a brilliantly marketed product I must say, complete with some race car driver endorsements and declarations of reducing pollution.. I did just what the product said, and, just like with the vortex, NO IMPROVEMENT WHATSOEVER. My dad asked me several times about this because I guess his friend was asking him, and I had to tell him with the confidence instilled by my spreadsheet that his product did nothing to improve my mpg. I was already hypermiling before I used it, so subconsciously changing my driving habits didn't happen.

One product I DID achieve success with was the Scangauge II. I went from low to mid 20s in my last commute up to around 29-31 during the summer. Winter results less dramatic. But I strongly recommend the Scangauge II.

hey, I have had good results with this. <-- wasnt expecting any at all-----!!
I have a 2005 Ford Explorer that gets between 14.6 and 15.2 on average. I put this sucker in and my mpg jumped to 20.2<---- not ****ting you. So I realize that some dont see anything and I wasnt expecting it either-- but **** it works for me and I will use it. Anything I can do to squeeze a few more miles out is good for me.

Re: Vortec Cyclone?

The device is a complete ripoff scam.

You are a liar-probably a scam artist hired to sell this POS and to post positive stuff about this piece of junk.

DON'T BUY ANY ADD ON MPG DEVICES. THEY TAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR POCKET ADD MONEY TO THE POCKETS OF THE SELLERS.

Modifying you driving habits, dropping the weight of your vehicle, using lower weight oil(within specs), changing the aero profile-drag of the vehicle, lowering the rolling resistance of the tires(pressure or different tires), occasionally regearing, and very, very occasionally changing the cam (specifically the Metro) all help mpg.(Possible that increasing the compression could help, but rarely practical)

Nothing you put in the intake system will improve part throttle FE in a modern spark ignition car.The OEM engineers know their business.

I'll trust the (non)results from multiple controlled tests more than a single-post anonymous nobody on the internet, thanks.

Re: Vortec Cyclone?

Hi Sszewczuk:

Just 20.2 mpg from an Explorer? I pulled more than 40% over that in an almost 8,000 pound Super Duty 4x4 crossing the country last month without any "device" attached. Now you know the types of drivers you are responding too... Most here do not put up with any BS device announcements and this device is full of it.

These are a waste of time, effort and $'s... Let alone that one test where one of the fins was almost ingested into the engine

Good Luck

Wayne

That increase you got was because you were more aware of your fuel economy and started driving differently. There have been multiple controlled tests done on devices like this one with little to no improvement. I am willing to bet that if you take that thing out and change your habits you can get over 20.2 MPG.

Re: Vortec Cyclone?

sszew-

Maybe I was a bit harsh with the liar accusation, but

1)In your first post you praise a worthless product.
2) MPG scam devices have been hawked for 90 years. They rob honest people who are are trying to save money/save the planet/get us off foreign energy.
3)50 years ago the most common scam product was a "100 mpg carburetor" that had been suppressed by the oil companies. There were ads for it in lots of mags.

Do you really think GM's Ford's Toyota's engineers are sooo incompetent that they could be out engineered like that?

Most folks on this forum have spent lots of time thinking about FE. Many are barely reformed motor head, hot-rod owners who like to tinker with cars/trucks/motorcycles/bicycles. We have seen(occasionally tried) all the scam devices.

Good rule of thumb- if it claims to improve your FE- it won't.

1)Modify how you drive
2)Drop weight
3)Lower rolling resistance
4)Lower drag
5)Regearing, changing cams, increased compression might work- usually too expensive

I have used Vortec Cyclone for 17 days only to return it. I would love to know how you got your results. I went on a 430 mile beach trip for a test. I actually got better gas mileage not using it!

One thing good about Vortec Cyclone is that they did refund my money.
